securing batteries and propane tanks

As I make arrangements to double my lp capacity, I figure that I should make it difficult for anyone to remove one or both tanks. This got me thinking that the battery could use protection too. How many of you lock your propane tanks and or batteries?

Nope. Ive heard of thefts, but they aren't a common problem around here.

Nothing on my 2 batteries.

I have a chain around the frame and a padlock that secures both propane tanks.

I figured that I needed something to do so I added a lock to my LP tanks see the picture below. I decided that I wanted to protect my 2 Trojan T145 6 volt batteries. I used my old tow chain that snapped a long time ago, but I kept it and I am glad I did. I slipped up one end of the chain through the battery tray. I bolted it under the TT and slipped the other chain around the back of the batteries and cut it the length I needed to have the lock connect the back end of the chain to the front end. Picture below.

It really doesn't matter how you secure your stuff, if someone really wants it they will take it. This will keep the unprepared thief from getting my stuff and maybe moving on to an easier ripoff.

I forgot to mention that I welded the bottom of the threaded rod to the base of the LP tank support.

I do the same as MUSTANG65,,, Easy to drill hole down through the wing nut as shown. However anyone with a battery operated grinder or bolt cutter can cut the lock in seconds.. Just slows them them down abit hopefully...

This is the photo I got my info lock info from...

Google Image

My new TORKLIFT 59-inch Battery bank Box will be mounted to my trailer tongue area using the round head stove bolts on the bottom with the Washers and Nuts on the inside of the Battery Box. Hopefully the round head under the trailer frame will help alot from the battery powered grinders...

My TORKLIFT Metal DIAMOND PLATE Battery Box however has a slide off top lid and uses an internal key lock to rotate a lever through an slot to lock the top lid. The KEY of course is one of those infamous CH751 that all RV Owners use alot of...

I will be changing that out for sure hehe...

Bottom line is there isn't much one can do to protect from theft. Just keep the honest folks more honest is about all you can do... Maybe do something to make it a bit more difficult and time consuming. I also have motion detector lights that come on my trailer when someone or some thing comes wandering up from the trails. Of course that probably just gives the thief more light to work from hehe...

In all my travels I have never lost anything to theft. Its funny but I did lose my sears DC Current meter that I use to measure DC CURRENT current around the 4AWG battery cables... I looked and looked for it around my Trailer Tool box the next time I needed it not to be found... A month of so later I was camping back up off a trail I like to go to alot and there it was laying under a tree haha... Right where I laid it I suppose...

I lock both. I have a cable lock on my propane tanks and have a steel bracket with a padlock on the battery. Isn’t thief proof but will make it more difficult to steal.

I thought they were supposed to not be locked. Same reason the propane bottle compartment on fifth wheels does not have a lock (battery compartment is locked).

Not sure why this is an issue. Unless it is for some unlucky firefighter to remove the tanks from a burning RV?

With all the unsecured propane tanks around I have never worried about locking mine.

The JAYCO 5er across from us has locks on both LP tank doors? My EAGLE TT front LP compartment door does not.
