Setting up at the campsite

Hello everyone,

I wanted to get some advise on how you should setup at your campsite. I tow a 20' trailer. Would someone be kind enough to discuss what steps you take when you setup. Leveling, unhooking, water sewer electric, any other concerns. We're getting ready for our first shake-down trip with our new camper, and I'd like to hear for those w/experience, so I don't develope bad habits. thank you all in advance, this is a great site for a novice. When replying if you could give your directions in order that would be helpful.

Hi Steve, unfortunately I am not at home for another week, so I can't get to the checklist that we have for setting up/breaking down camp (we are about to embark on a Caribbean cruise *woo-hoo*). One thing I can say is to make sure you chalk your tires before you unhook your trailer. And before you chalk the tires and unhook, check to make sure that your electrical line and water hose will reach there plug-in post.

Really important though is to have a check list for breaking down camp! Little things like forgetting to put down the tv antenna and leaving the furnace on can be forgotten easily. Anyhow, I have no doubt there are others here are willing to share their own checklists!

1) Back or Pull trailer in site. Find that it is close to level.
2) Place wood or plastic blocks under the tires that are on the low side
3) Pull trailer up on the blocks. Check level again.
4) Chock Tires so trailer does not move when you disconnect trailer from tow vehicle. Do not ask me how I know this step in the process!!
5) Disconnect trailer
6) Level trailer front to back with tongue jack.
From this point, set up the rest as you see fit.

thanks healthi and Our Jayco for the info, I think working w/a check list is a good practice to follow, I found one on another site that I can add to to make it our own. We are looking forward to our first trip and this help will make it easier.

Good advise given already by everyone. Just do the same process everytime, and you will be OK. I use a giant level on my pin box and like it because I can level both ways in a glance. I carry a small 2' level in case the one on the trailer gets messed up. Linx levelers are nice to use for side to side. I get the trailer level then start with the utility hook-ups.
