Shore power with no battery

I'm planning on removing my battery for the winter. Will I have have power if I hook it up to shore power?

Yes if connected to shore power all 12 v features will work. Be sure and secure the cables where they would attach to battery to make sure they dont touch to ground.

Why remove the battery? I can think of only one reason, to prevent theft, but that's all I can come up with.

How about to keep it from discharging too far and shortening its life? I'm planning on float charging mine in the garage, less because I'm afraid of theft, and more because I want to maintain a healthy battery. Too much discharge is not good for any battery, even deep cycles...

If your going to keep it on shore power there is absolutey no reason to remove it just keep an eye on the water levels unless you have a "Smart Converter Charger". Mine has been plugged in 24/7 365 since we bought it in 08, batteries are still fine.

There is also another reason you should have your battery installed and working on your trailer is to support the DOT REQUIREMENT for a trailer being pulled over state roads having an emergency brake system in place to stop a run-away trailer if it becomes disconnected going down the state highways. Your installed battery provides 12VDC power for this DOT requirement.

The DOT rule is if your trailer has electric brakes installed it must have this feature installed and working. If you DO NOT plan on moving this trailer down any state roads without the battery installed then it would be a NO ISSUE thing.

Just something else to check into haha...

Thanks for the replies. Going to keep the battery in the garage out of the weather and keep it charged. I was wondering about hooking up shore power to do some mods if I can make the time.

You are fine removing the battery. It is a good time to check the water level too. If you need to refill, only use distilled water. I would recommend marking the wire leads with a terminal marking so you know which one connects to the positive and negative terminals in the spring. I also wrap the connectors with a little bit of electrical tape so you do not accidentally ground out the converter when it is connected to the shore power.
