Years ago I had a popup and a reserved spot but it was the last one so had to take it. No way to back in but neighbors helped me push it into place with the tiny front wheel digging in, getting out was not much better.

Every now and then I get it right on the first try and my wife will yell "you did good dear" but in the last six years I can count those on one hand .

There is an inverse relationship between the ease of backing into your site with the number of people watching you. Nobody watching? Bim, bam, I'm in there on the first shot. Twenty people watching and after fifteen tries, I'm off to the spot 15 miles down the road.

Awesome, and excellent analysis! I wonder if there is a phobia named for this, as I share the affliction!

I think that backing success depends not on skill, but on attitude and definitions.

When I get into a site and the trailer is placed in a good position, and I didn't hit anything or damage the truck or trailer in any way, for me that is a success. Regardless of how many times I had to backup and adjust or how long it took. And if my backing provided a bit of entertainment for other campers, so much the better.

What makes me mad is if I get backed into a site, and didn't realize it was electricity only, and then have to pull out to go fill up my water tanks and then do the backing all over again!

I've put out 40' fiver into some tight spots. Those seem to be the easy ones. It's the ones when you think you have tons of room that you get all jacked up. I rarely go where there are pull-thru's. I also hate pushing the trailer wheels sideways when you get too tight an angle.

Putting it beside the house at home requires backing off a narrow road into the side driveway with deep ditches either side and a pair of 40' pine trees for gate posts. I'm to where it's a one shot deal 90% of the time.

No, it's Sidewinder Road north near Yuma, AZ - spring break this year. We only stayed 1 night, but we were by ourselves. There were a couple of people a mile or so away, but it was quiet. Loved the hard packed rocks. I want to go back this winter.

I'll have to check that out this winter. Plomosa Rd north of Quartzsite is very similar rock surface.

Edit: just checked where it is. I've been in the general area, was off Ogilby Rd. What are all the patterns and roads on the ground that Google sat view shows?

Some are pretty straightforward
Some not so much... Did this between the trees with no spotter coming off the downhill side of the roundabout. A little spooky with no passenger side view.

It was Camp Pilot Knob - where the army (General Patton) setup a training facility before WWII. Those marks are from where they had tents. Pretty cool walking around down there. There is stuff laying around (old metal) that is probably from that time. I made sure I didn't park on those spots when I pulled in. Ogilby road is pretty busy with the dune's and campers - was when I pulled in too, but this place was super quiet and I liked having the place all to myself. It was pretty funny actually how busy ogilby road was and how only 1 more exit toward home it was nearly empty.

Close up trying to get my reflection.

Thanks for the info. We've stopped in at the Patton Museum up on I10 while boondocking outside of JTNP. I've found practice bomb casings when walking in the desert up near Bouse and you can still see the track marks left by tanks.

Only in the desert would the marks exists forever.

Easy Tip

Before backing up place your hand at the bottom of the steering wheel then direct the steering wheel in the direction you want your trailer, try not to over steer.

Mine is having to back my 355 out of customs after I was told the clearance was a “hard” 13’4. Three customs agents had clear a line of 10 cars out behind me. Oops. Was told if I had even flintched backing up they would have ripped it all apart. Then a smile and have a great vacation.

We did a short stay at a campground in MD a few weeks ago on the way home from the Outer Banks. It was pouring rain, our site was fairly small and it was a passenger side back. The place was packed and the road was narrow. I asked the guy across from me if he could move his truck which would have made my back in much easier but he refused. Told me he'd been drinking and also that he didn't want to get wet. Was a total pain but was able to get backed in after a few tries.
