single axle vs. double?

Looks like my son will be getting married which means he will be in the market for his own camper before too much longer.... He is interested in one of the ultra lite campers and he said the single axle fish tail much easier than a double..... would really appreciate feedback from TT owners about this..... would also like suggestions of Jayco's to look at..... not interested in hybrids... thanks!

What will he tow with? I don't know if this helps, but we needed what we were told was a single axle tt if we were to tow with our minivan; pretty much a single axle weighs under 3000-3500lbs loaded (?) and the max tow for our minivan is 3500lbs. We bought a 17' Casita but found it didn't have much room. At the time, Jayco didn't make the smaller tt's but those single axles do have more room than the 'egg' tt's.

We use to have a Jayco popup, single axle and I remember some sway...never a severe "fish tail". Now we have the X19H (sorry it's a hybrid) with tandem axles and an Equalizer hitch (with sway bars)...NO SWAY at all.
Our TV is a 2000 Blazer, which is borderline strong enough to pull the X19H.

Sorry, I forgot to include his TV....it's a Silverado 1/2 ton with a 5.3 engine like the one I tow my 1/2 ton towable 5th wheel so he will be fine with that part...... thanks for your input!

We have been VERY HAPPY with our 26BH. It pulls very well with our 1/2 ton Ford. I would reccommend looking into the 26BH. Dual axles, max weight of 7500 lbs. Lots of room for a young couple with small children. We had a 1996 264BH before the 26BH (same floor plan).

My daughter and SIL, with 15 month old child, are really enjoying their 184BH. It's really light, yet has bunks for the baby and still room for another one soon (maybe). They tow it with a Honda Pilot and have no sway issues even though it is a single axle.

Not sure on how light he needs to be, these are in the low 4000 range. Anything ultralight seem to be Hybrids.

Our Jayflight 22fb works great for us (no human kids). If Kids are in the future, then Jayflight 26bh seems to be a good choice at a good price.

IF he is getting fishtailing he does not have enough tongue weight... None of my single axles ever fishtailed.. or any other trailer for that matter .. as I keep the tongue wt at the 15% mark... or higher...

sunshine--- Just as seann45 says, not enough tongue weight. ie the trailer was loaded wrong. That can happen with dual axels as well. Don't forget to factor in " drag'' when looking for his tt, GM must have that info somewhere on the web.Does his tv have a "factory tow package" . Larry

Yes, we both have the factory tow pkg..... he was just concerned that a single axle would want to fish tail....... he has 1 daughter and I don't think they are in any hurry to have kids so I'm gonna have him check out the 22fb..... and we will remember about the tongue wt. I saw the floor plan for the 197 & 199 (?) and I thought they were neat..... I appreciate all the input.... I think they want something less than 20' long but not sure.

Sunshine -- most 17 & 18' tt's are single axel, dual axels start at 19' if thats still a concern. While weight is an issue , tv's with tow packages probable won't know the difference between 17 & 23" tt's and the drag is the same. the biggest difference will be in the pocket book. Larry

Larry, he's young and his pocket book is pretty lite so he is looking for a good, clean, used tt. We just wanted to be as informed as possible.... really appreciate everyone's input..... now the search is on...

We have the 2012 154BH SWIFT, single axel, we use a sway bar and we have not noticed any swaying at all.

With the proper hitch height and weight sway should not be a problem. I prefer the double axle incase of a flat tire. I think a double axle would give you more controll.
