No need for a camper shell. I have a yakima rack over the cab (think they run in the $100 range, can't remember exactly) and then I built a rack for the back out or 2x4 for the stake holes. Holds a 13'-6" tandem kayak well.

Years ago I used an inflatable pontoon type for fishing small lakes and ponds and never had a problem with it. They have so improved the materials now that this is what I'm going with. It uses the same material of the same weight that my Coast Guard nephew said they have in their search and rescue launches.....
