Small Boats for Camping Trips

I am new to camping. I think its going to be a fun pass-time for me and my wife. The problem is before I bought an RV, I was a boater and a fisherman. Now when I take trips to beautiful scenic sites with small lakes and see guys out in their in boats casting, I am going to wish I had just some way to be out there with them. I thought of buying a camper shell with a cargo rack on top just so I could carry a canoe. The problem with this is the cost. I have seen where you can buy truck racks that look nice but I have no experience with them as to how they hold down small boats while traveling. My trailer is not a fifth wheel so I cannot carry a boat behind me. Inflatables seem to be an option, but I think the first snag I hit would be a problem. Does anyone out there carry a small boat with them on trips that they can share their experience?

I use a 10 ft kayak which I put in the bed of my truck. Works great for me and fishing is no problem out of it. It is a sit in kayak. I mostly camp by myself but do tow a Starcraft 176RB with a long bed Toyota truck.

We have a 12 foot Port-A-Boat that my husband built a holder for under the 5th wheel. We have had that boat out in the Sea of Cortez, Mexico with three guys in it. It is also easily enough for him to handle it himself either fishing or crabbing. It is one of our best buys except of course the Eagle.

I'm planning to install a ladder rack to haul my 17ft Old Town Penobscot we got for a song at a garage sale. I would use a homemade wooden rack just to hold up the stern, but DW doesn't approve of the Clampet look...

I have a set of these that I take on and off to haul my canoe. I use the clamps that are for truck caps/topper/camper shells to hold them. Never had a problem. I do however have a camper shell with racks on the way.

Was thinking very seriously about a Porte-a-bote. It seems like that might be the best way for us. Wife's car cannot tow anything according to the tow manual.

We love ours and have used it now for about 7 years. Been on the Columbia River Washington with it and it handles great. Also out in the Puget Sound for crabbing.

No need for a camper shell. I have a yakima rack over the cab (think they run in the $100 range, can't remember exactly) and then I built a rack for the back out or 2x4 for the stake holes. Holds a 13'-6" tandem kayak well.

Years ago I used an inflatable pontoon type for fishing small lakes and ponds and never had a problem with it. They have so improved the materials now that this is what I'm going with. It uses the same material of the same weight that my Coast Guard nephew said they have in their search and rescue launches.....
