Smoke alarm: Check this!

Something that came out of another thread (“Fridge Fire”) is important enough I think it warrants a new thread for those who might not have read it...

It seems a lot of us assumed the smoke alarms on our new rigs were ready and working after taking possession. However, it seems at least some dealers do not remove the plastic tab between the battery and contacts, rendering it useless. And it doesn’t come up in the PDI. So, if you are a newbie, or have never checked your alarm battery, take a quick look to make sure it’s operable. And remember to change batteries regularly, just like at home.

During the off season, I pull all the misc batteries from all the devices. When I do this I leave the smoke detector door open, to remind me in the spring I need to install a new battery. On the new battery I wrap a piece of painter's tape on it, and write the date, just incase I forget to change it, I know when it was last replaced.

In another post, I commented about a buddy of mine who has a seasonal RV. He pulls the smoke alarm battery every time he goes home. This makes me nervous, because he has to remember every single time he shows up to power up the alarm. I always wondered if his grown kids remember to engage it when they show up without dad.

And you're supposed to push the test button every 30 days too.

Ours was located less than 4 feet from the stove. Almost anything that was cooked would set it off. I changed it out for a photoelectric type. No false alarms since I did the swap.

Ours too. Checked PE type but in California they will only sell the 10-year permanent battery style, not 9-volt. I could see the thing chirping for months in the storage yard after a few years.

We used our trailer for almost a year before I discovered the smoke detector had never been activated. That got me to thinking about how to get out in a hurry if there was a fire. When I tried our emergency escape window IT WOULD NOT OPEN! Turns out a screw holding the window frame was put in at an angle and was protruding out enough to catch the window preventing it from opening.

So check all of your escape windows and plan on how you will use them if the need arises.

Kind of a built in safety feature, every RV we have had anytime we use the stove, electric frying pan, toaster it goes off. When we ordered our 22RB we had the Maxx air fan put in just for such a time.
