I put a flattened piece of aluminum foil inside the clear cover. I positioned it to cut out about half the light coming from the fixture. I used it with incandescant bulbs and it didn't overheat.

If you have incandescent bulbs in the fixture, you might consider switching them to LEDs. I used warm 36 SMD panel LEDs above the bed in our TT and they are less annoying to me when the DW is trying to read and I'm trying to get some sleep.
My LED light over the bed was way too bright. I used a piece of colored film (blue) cut to fit inside the lens cover. If one piece doesn't cut it down enough, simply add more pieces.

X2....works perfectly. Quick and inexpensive!!

The reading light above the bed on my new Jay Flight 23RB travel trailer is entirely too bright. Any ideas on how to soften it substantially?
Todd:
I can think of no reason why you cannot replace the on/off rocker switch with a rheostat (dimmer switch) that allows you complete freedom to set the lighting intensity to a level that is appealing to you. Besides, it would then be a simple matter to light up the bedroom to full strength while you are fumbling around to find a lost contact lens on the floor LOL. I guess, if you do install a rheostat my suggestion in a different thread to use a long stick to control your bedroom light switch probably won't work (LOL again).
We bought a couple battery dome lights that we put underneath the closets in our bedroom, one click to turn on and one click to turn off and there is no obnoxious light in your face
