Stabilizers in Winter Storage

Just polling and asking the question . . . who puts their stabilizers down when they put their trailer to bed for the winter? I have always been advised to not do that, because over the cold months, tires lose air pressure and more weight gets transferred to the stabilizers - sometimes more than is recommended. I have not done this for any of the trailer's I've owned, but I have observed some that do.

But just wanting to see what others do, the reasons why or why not, and what their experiences have been, either way.

Mine are up for the reason you stated.

On my way to my parents place, I can see three TTs, in one neighborhood, where there are three TTs, visible from the highway, that all have there stabilizers down all winter.

Keep mine up. Not worth the risk.

When I stored mine the stabilizers were always up.. 4 less points for mice to get at the underbelly.

I place four HD Jacks under the TT chassis just to clear the tires from the boards they sit on.

Keep them up for the same reasons everyone else has mentioned

Always installed 1 stabilizer on the old trailer whenever it was parked. All 4 if expected to be used.


Since this new one has 4 easy to deploy stabilizers, I always use all 4. Mice and other varmints have plenty of options anyway and it is parked on grass. Everything sinks!

Leave mine down just enough to keep the t/t steady in heavy winds.

I keep ours down when the trailer is at home, but up during the winter when it's at the storage yard. The yard manager says they won't move the trailer from where they tell me to park it, but if they do I don't want to take the risk that they will damage the stabilizers unknowingly.

Same reason I put mine down. I found that I lose no more than 5 psi over a winter. Makes very little difference in height. I've been doing it this way with 3 different trailers over more than a 20 year period.

I now store my EXP 213 with the jacks down. We store our trailer in our driveway which happens to sit crossways to the prevailing wind. Where we live it is always windy with gusty 100 kph winds very common (chinooks). When I stored the trailer with the jacks up it would rock in the wind gusts and you could actually watch an oscillating movement begin which would move the whole trailer. The final straw came when I came home one day during a particularly strong chinook and found that the trailer had moved about six feet almost to the point where it went over the edge of the retaining wall on the downwind side of the driveway. I now store the trailer on the upwind side of the driveway with the jacks down and it has never moved. I do keep a close eye on the tires.

When I could park the trailer in my driveway I put the stabilizers down, of course this is cause it was my man cave and beer cooler, but now I have to store it in a storage lot, I find there is no advantage to dropping the stabilizers, as is, I can hook up and drive away easier, no need to run the electric motors
