Stink Bugs Ruin Camping in Cincinnati, Ohio
Well, decided to get away for a couple days at a local county park.
We got the only water view site in the campground.

Unfortunately, the stink bugs were extremely heavy in the campground and we left after 24 hours.
There was no less that 50-100 on my TT and TV at any given time. I killed at least 100-150.
They crawl into every small crevice, door seals and windows.
After I found 2 in my coffee pot sitting on top of the grill, that did me in.
They were like a combination of cock roaches and Cicadas. Very creepy and annoying.
I always expect some bugs when in the outdoors, but this just wasn't any fun.
I heard from others that they had run into them in Tennessee too.

I don't know if this is fact - but my son says they are attracted to the color white (it is a fact that they are attracted to light)....but that makes sense if they swarmed your TT....then after they land, they methodically search out crevasses or cracks to congregate.....

Yep,
My TT attracted them being white, but everyone in the CG was having trouble with them.
What a pain.
Seen 4 Jayco's out of about 25 campers :-)

I've been driven out by knats - long ago. Here in NM we sometimes get a fair number of tarantulas in some areas - one time wife wanted to leave after 2 showed up, but I convinced her to stay and we had a great trip.
Swarms suck...

Another maybe fact is that if you squish them the odor from killing them attracts more and more. I find them in my house once is a while and they are usually by lights so I have a rule for everyone to not kill them but catch them and place them outside again.
Sorry it ruined your trip.

We have a terrible gnat problem here this year. Sorry for your stink bug "excursion". BTW, why do they call them stink bugs? I've stepped on them but don't smell anything

Evidently they have a stinky excretion that they can discharge to discourage birds and other preditors.

Doug,
We're at East Fork this week, and they are bad here too. I'd like to find a repellent that's not harmful to us or our dogs.

I made up the Dawn solution and killed a bunch, but it didn't repel others.
I just had window/door openings full of dead ones.
They're creepy. I parked my TV and TT outside when I got home because they were still coming out of cracks and crevasses.
Hope you find something.
Doug

We're you at East Fork near East Lynn? I went there today to fish awhile, a game warden told me the cg is closing due to govt shutdown.

We have had stink bugs here in New Jersey for a few years now. Just last week with the warm weather I see they are back. First year I was freaked by them but after reading up they are in Lady Bug family. They don't harm you just a nuisance. I just throw them back outside.

Doug, I should be thankful because we haven't seen any at our farm near Oxford. What SP are you referring to, if you don't mind me asking.

Kim,
I was at Winton Woods, Hamilton County, Ohio.
Another forum member reported them heavy at East Fork SP, Ohio as well.
Best regards,
Doug

Hopefully we'll be spared as we were during last cicada invasion.

Demand CS will kill them. After its sprayed on, and dry's it takes about 4 hours for them to go belly up. Its the only thing I have ever found that will kill them.
The price looks expensive at first, but when you mix it yourself, it's cheaper than Home Defense that we buy for lady bugs by about a $1.00 a gallon.

Yep, we have them in huge numbers here in Virginia this year. A little unusual - can't remember having this many ever before. Read that the federal government introduced them a number of years ago to this country in order to control a perceived overpopulation of lady bugs. As usual, they didn't do their homework, and made no provision for control of an overpopulation of stink bugs. Personally, I'd rather have a lot of lady bugs than the stinkers.

Since they are an invasive species, I capture them with a napkin and then crush them. I try to kill as many as I can.
