surge protector 30 or 50

looking at buying a surge protector my question... my fifth wheel is upgraded to to 50 amp b/c its wired for a 2nd AC unit which i didnt add and wont add we dont have a need for it... i would say half of my camping is done where they only have 30 amp so i have to use a reducer from 50 to 30... so in buying a surge protector should i buy the 50 or 30 amp... thank you

If your "never" going to upgrade only buy the 30, but for the difference in price and the possibility of a different rig, I'd go 50.

If the plug on your RV is a 50 amp, I would get the corresponding EMS (Not surge protector). You would them plug the EMS (Electrical management system) into the pedestal and then your RV plug into the EMS. Then your always protected.

I agree with wags999. Either will work but the 50 even though costing more will allow the power hookup to use less adapters.

So buy the 50 and and plug FW into that then use the drop down from 50 to 30 to plug in to the camp spot? What is the difference in SSP-50XL 50 Amp Smart Surge Protector and EMS-PT50X 50 Amp EMS with Surge Protection.

Read the first sentence in the link below. Both offer surge protection but the EMS unit does more. Spend the extra $ and get the EMS unit for the added protection in provides.

Most plug the EMS into the pedestal and then you can secure it with a chain or padlock to the pedestal. Then adapt it to 30a on one or the other end of the power cord.

This is what I was looking at. I know not a fan of camping World but actually cheaper than amazon and have a $50 coupon.

There will probably be many opinions on the topic, my preference is Progressive Industries. I’ve owned 2, a 30A pole-mount and a 50A hard-wire.

I believe it's important to understand that a 50a EMS is comprised of two (2) 50a circuits (relays) which can pass up to 100a of total power to your 5th wheel. A 30a EMS only has one (1) 30a circuit (relay) which only has a total capacity of 30a. Huge difference in current capability.

If you're going to use a portable 30a EMS along with the appropriate adapters to pass power to both "legs" (or circuits) of your TT's 50a power cord, that shouldn't be a problem. However, I would definitely not recommend hard-wiring a 30a EMS (or simple surge protector) inside your 5th wheel for a number of safety reasons.

Many a campground poles have weak 30amp circuits IMO. 30amp sockets and breakers are overused. Most 50amp are in better shape. Our Portable Surge Guard with Diagnostics, 50 Amp ($150 CW) has found poor to bad circuits and protected us well.

Additionally, are you leaving your RV in the campground unattended for extended periods? I know some lock their Surge Guard plugs but we are never gone from our camp site for more than hours or it's; shut off the water and unplug the power. We do leave the 5r level and slides out.

While walking the dogs I have seen more RVs leaking water than seen or heard of stolen surge protectors. If your that concerned then a perm installed surge protector may suit your need...
