Jim, thanks your way higher up the food chain than drywall gypsum manufacturing! If you want the best protection on your property I would have a properly rated TVSS installed. Do you know any electrical engineers that know AC power that can find out your available fault current, your demand load and the type, and rating of your transformer that supplies your property and then can size a TVSS to wire into your incoming service for maximum protection? Might sound a little extreme but a good EE will be able to do this with a call to your utility company and some calculations.

One more thing Jim, no matter how well maintained your electrical system is there is always the threat of outside influences and problems within the grid such as a transformer failure. We recently here in the Seattle area had a very rare lighting storm and then a rare heavy snow both of which caused transformers to blow which imparted 240volts on 120 volt circuits which "fried" anything plugged into that phase the receptacle was on.
