Went many years without one. Finally broke down and bought a PI 30 portable EMS for the Eagle. Went with portable because we may be going to a 5th wheel in the next few years and shouldn't have any problems selling the 30 amp model. If we get the 5th wheel, I'll install the hard wire unit from PI.

Another option that should be part of the mfg offering. I think Jayco and others are really missing the boat when it comes to upgrades and accessories.

I will be installing\hard wiring the EMS HW50C with remote display on the new Eagle.

That is why buying used is an art. Some owners try to put onto unsuspecting and often naive its-obviously-a-good-deal owners backs the problems they have created due to their own (insert and appropriate word).

Many of the used RV electrical problems are a result of ignored annual maintenance and power issues that add up over time. A low voltage situation might not cause an immediate failure but do some damage that is not obvious now but eventually leads to a premature failure.

Same with other ignored regular maintenance.

I have had numerous conversations during an inspection where a repair or maintenance simply wasn't done. The owner was all about the avoidance get by.

That is why I rarely buy used, especially on larger purchases like vehicles. I would rather not inherit someone else's problems or maintenance list. Its already enough just dealing with warranty issues new.

My answer is no, but will definitely purchase one next spring when I bring the 5er out of winter storage.

I think you will find a lot of people in agreement with you.

Personally, I'm not worried because I have the service maintenance training and inspection skills, so I know where to look and who I need to bring in to help fill the gaps. The cost savings can be enormous buying used, even with having to fix, replace, and do delayed maintenance, and even if I miss something which is not likely because I also track the vin, the recalls, and do RV forum searches for known problems. Very hard to hide things if the buyer has the knowledge.

We are talking easily between 75K to 200K commonly, and that is net of the 5k to 20K likely range of costs to get the unit road ready, with plenty of room for furniture, entertainment, new wood floors, etc. to freshen up the unit.

The real problems come from people who don't have the skills, and do things like seeing water damage and assume its an easy fix, without being savvy enough to have a detailed inspection/cost estimate of the water damage done before they buy.

A Safari unit I inspected had a problem with the front driver's window. The owner pulled it out of storage, found a crack in the windshield, had it fixed then found it leaked. What he did not know was this was identified as a recurring issue and that he would likely never solve the problem the way he was approaching it. Knowing it was a recurring problem would at least allow one to research it to determine if a long-term fix was available, rather than suffering with it. Unless there was a long-term fix available, that would be a pass up purchase for me.

EMS PT50C. I will never hook up without it even at my home base. I actually have two of them. One still in the box will be put in service if the primary one ever has to go back for warranty service.

Progressive EMS PT50C is the one I have. The only reason I like the built in on is the remote monitor but this one has done the job for almost a year and I know it can be repaired if it get damaged by a strike.

It also will be harder to "walk off" than the in-line models, as well.

I have been saved twice by one.
Now looking at options for permanent mount with remote display.
Anyone willing to share what they use and why they chose it over something else?

I learned the hard way in my early TT days. A lightning strike fried my systems. Luckily wiring survived so it was only a $600 repair bill. Could have been much worse.

Now I would never hook up without!
