Third Propane Tank Question

I have a new Eagle HT (30.5MBOK) and I got the dry camping package, so it has three propane tanks. I can’t figure out how the third one interacts with the other two.

The two on one side have a lever to select the primary tank. I assume the unselected tank will automatically start when the primary one is empty, although I can’t find anything to support that.

I have no idea about the third one installed on the other side. It’s filled and connected. To what and how I don’t know. The guy doing my PDI said it’s specifically for the generator (which I don’t have), but I have a hard time believing it’s isolated only for that. Anybody mind explaining it to me? Thanks!

I'm curious to get the answer for we have the 3rd tank but it is not hooked up to anything. I just switch it out with my two that are hooked to the RV.

Follow the hose and see if it goes to a pipe, then to the rear of the camper for a gas grill hook up. I have seen this set up before. Good luck.

Does your unit have the generator prep package? I have a 377 North Point and the third tank is the fuel specifically for the generator. I don't have a gen so I use it to fire up my Weber and Blackstone.

I do have the generator prep package, with no gen. I talked to my dealer today and he tells me that all three bottles are plumbed together to everything. The lever on the side with the two bottles can be used to select all three. He says point it straight up or down to select the third. I’ll check it out soon and report back if this turns out to be true.

This is another example of how too many RV techs are unfamiliar with the products they are supposed to service. My Pinnacle has a 3rd tank along with a propane fueled generator. I asked the service tech about how the tank interacted with the other two. His response was "I don't know, when the other two are turned off, there is still gas to the system." Not exactly the answer I was looking for. I followed the tubing, and it appears that the third tank ties into the main gas line after the regulator for the other two. This tells me that it makes no difference where the tank selector for the other two is set, the third tank is always supplying gas. I don't see this as a problem as long as one remembers to shut the third tank off before monkeying with anything gas related. What works for me is to leave the third tank shut off most of the time. With a residential refrigerator, there is nothing which will be seriously impacted if both initial tanks run dry. I will turn on the third tank when needed. I don't know if there would be a better way to hook the tank into the system, I just wish the "experts" were a little more knowledgeable about the systems they support.

Agreed Jim. I ended up doing some tests on my own w the 3rd tank on my NP 377 and from what I can tell it does not appear to be plumed into the main system and I do not have a selector switch to add it. I closed the 2 tanks which are connected w the changeover switch and let propane drain from the lines. Open 3rd tank and nothing happens. I basically use it now as a spare and to fire up the BBQ's.

Jayco should know how the propane is plumbed........ask them. The RV industry comes up with new inventions and accessories..........but lack on explaining them to the consumer.

Third Propane Tank Question

Ahh, I thought so. Tech told you wrong. That's the automatic changeover switch. It let's you see which tank is active. The tank the dial is pointing to is the active tank. When that tank goes empty the glass goes red and gas will automatically start pulling from the second tank. You then need to switch the black dial to point to the second tank so you know that's now active. The third tank is not used in this mix. Very good feature for when you're running the furnace overnight.

I finally got around to asking Jayco this question and they promptly replied:

“Thank you for reaching out to Jayco tech support. I spoke to our service department and they said that the 3rd tank is a roll over tank used if you run out of propane in the first two. You would keep it closed until it is needed.
I hope this answers your question, feel free to reach out if you need anything else.”

In using the camper, I’ve learned that three 30lb tanks is more than plenty for us, and I really just need the two. But the third tank is quite easy to pull out (much easier than the others), so I’ve been using it as a portable tank for grilling, I just pop it out and setup the grill wherever I like, then store back in its spot when I’m done.

Is the third tank connected to the main system? Does it have its own regulator?

The third tank is connected to the system. It has its own regulator, but there is no selector switch for it. If the tank is open, it's feeding into the system.

Here is the answer I got from Jayco customer service: "this tank is used as a reserve tank and is connected to the main line. If the tank is open it will feed the system. Sometimes it is best to leave this off so that you are always sure to have a backup in case you run out of lp in the middle of the night."
