Tire blowout question

I have a question for those who may of experienced a tire blowout. Do hear the tire blow and do you feel any erratic movement of the trailer? The reason I'm asking is today while driving down the highway we passed a trailer going the other way who had had a blowout as there was no tire on the rim. Then later on we passed a toy hauler and we could see the tire starting to smoke and come apart. Hopefully this will be something I never have to experience .

There are no common things I have heard it on some occasions and noticed the tire coming apart in the rear view mirror with no sound.

I have had a rear dually explode from road debris and only heard the explosion and the rear fiberglass fender and running board come off in large pieces.

Never experienced any loss of control. I have not had a blowout on the present truck front or rear so I have no first hand experience with that.

I have a buddy tell me a tire came off his trailer and pass him and he did not know it was missing.

No loss of control at all. Just smoke and the feeling that we were running thunk thunk thunk.. This was on a single axle TT so your experience may vary if you are in a MH

I lost a tire. I mean the whole tire sheared off (probably doing 55mph) on my dual axle X254. I caught a red light in a small town I was passing through and two separate vehicles pulled up along side of me in the left turn lane to say they saw my tire assembly fly off. They said the tire struck an unattended gas station building and partially tear off the plastic fenderwell trim three miles back. Thank the Lord for a red light!

I never felt or heard a thing.

I removed the trim and put on the spare once I got new studs inserted into the brake drum a the local town tire shop. I got new lug nuts, bearings greased and a new dust cover as well from them ($66 bill) to get rolling again two hours later.Click image for larger version

TPMS! I’ve had one dramatic blowout and one slightly less dramatic tire failure (within 75 miles of each other) that I was alerted to by my monitor. The notification prevented damage to my 5th in both cases. I wouldn’t have been aware of either failure without the monitor and I don’t travel without it.

I had one blow on the interstate about a year ago. When it went, it shredded the underbelly cover but luckily did no further damage. A couple of guys pulled up and pointed back to the camper, so I stopped to take a look. Horrible. Tire completely gone and rim shredded (and it had apparently been throwing out a trail of sparks). I hadn’t felt a thing and there was no effect on the steering. I own a TPMS now.

Before the days of TPMS I was towing a small cargo trailer (motorcycle and some tools) with a minivan. When driving along I told my wife, "look, someone lost a tire" as it rolled down the road. I looked back and saw sparks flying. It was mine. Did not notice it at all.

Had a total blow out in an older trailer. Didnt even know about it i
until a bob tail tractor pulled up along side and the guy in the passenger seat point to my trailer snd said.. tire.
We pulled over and tire was shredded. Did so much damage the insurance company totaled the trailer.
Never heard of felt anything.
Now.... I have a TPMS and wont be without it.

I've also had one blow out that luckily only caused about $10 in damage. I didn't feel it happen but heard the thumping noise.
After that I bought a TPMS.

If I understand our resident RV tire expert, Tireman9, correctly, odds are a flat tire will not be a blowout. A tire is far more likely to go flat relatively slowly; once it has lost enough air, it will shred. That's when the damage is caused. And it's also why a TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system) is critical - it will tell you the moment you start to lose air pressure. Alarms will go off, giving you time to get off the road safely BEFORE any damage is done.

I know from experience. Back in April had a trailer tire go flat as we went up the On ramp to get on I-95 south of Washington. TPMS started screaming. Was able to pull off safely and call AAA. No big deal. Now imagine if I had not had the TPMS and got to highway speeds on I95. The flat would have shredded, and quite possibly the tire on the other axle would have overheated and failed.

Moral of this story: Get a TPMS. Use it. Be safe, not sorry.

Me, caught 3 before blowouts (one nail going flat, the other 2 at 2.5 years old about 10K miles, not have TPMS... However, growing up we had a pop-up, we had a blow out and my father said something was wrong, the trailer was tipped to one side (single axle). He has no other indication we were riding the rim on that side. But I've heard others the trailer starts to wobble, guess it maybe weight and how loaded???
