Toilet not holding water

Hey everyone, just got back from a short 3 day trip, first one of the year [work keeps getting in the way]. I have the Thetford Style 2 porcelain foot flush ball type toilet. It's leaking around the seal really quickly. I have tried cleaning and conditioning the seal to no avail and I'm afraid replacement is necessary. I was wondering if anyone had done this and had any advice/direction on installation. Thanks, Terry

Toilet not holding water

There are several threads on this on this forum.
Last week when we were out my seal started leaking down. I cleaned it with a small brush, then sprayed it down with silicone spray. It has not leaked since!

Did a forum search on Thetford toilet seal replacement and came up pretty much empty. I have read on other Forums that this is a common problem with this model of toilet. I have looked it over top to bottom, front to back. I was trying to avoid pulling the whole toilet off the floor as I have read that just the bowl is removable but can't figure out how to remove just the plastic bottom piece to get to the bowl hold down. I'll figure it out.

We had a similar problem and did the same as Norty1. Ours hasn't leaked since. You might call Thetford customer service and tell them of your problem. They may be able to give you some good advise as to what to do.

I have a Style 2 and with full time use I'm convinced this potty won't last more than 2 years. I just replaced y entire unit a couple of weeks ago for the second time. Bowl gasket leaking, water valve leaking, foot flush mechanism starts to feel like it is binding up when flushing.

Thanks guys. I went back over to the camper today and conditioned the seal with olive oil and had the leak stopped to a trickle. Then I took a somewhat stiff nylon toilet brush and really cleaned the bottom side of the seal. Now I"m back to leaking rapidly, should have left it alone, the trickle was acceptable. I'll try and condition it one more time. I have contacted Thetford by e-mail and awaiting their reply. Thanks for the advice.

Hey TCN.....

Did you check out this thread?

It looks like he had the same problem you do, it wasn't holding water. He changed out the seal, sounded easy.

Thanks Gerald, I read that thread top to bottom twice EXCEPT for the last post. Should have kept up with it since he updated it. I was hoping not to have to remove the toilet from the floor but it seems easy. New gasket already on the way from Amazon. Mechanically, the toilet functions perfectly, so far. Thanks again, Terry

Had that problem in my old designer a couple different times. I put about a pint or so of Transmission fluid in it and let it sit. added more when it leaked out and seal finally swelled up and sealed. Lasted for two years as I recall. Tans. fluid has seal conditioners in it. Anyhow it worked for me, might be worth a try, then drain and flush holding tank!
Good luck!
