Toyota Sequoia versus Nissan Armada

I have had 2 Nissan Armadas and I know how well they tow. They have towed my old 301 bhd and now my Jayco X21M like a dream. I am thinking of getting a Toyota Sequoia. I know the towing capacity is 900 pounds more than my current Armada but am afraid to take the plunge just because I know how it tows and I have no idea how the Sequoia will tow. Has anybody on here towed with both vehicles and can ease my mind about buying one?

I would compare the two vehicles for their rear overhang distance, as a percentage of wheel base. Measure the distance from the rear axle to where the hitch ball will be. Divide this distance into the wheel base distance to get a percentage. The vehicle with the smaller percentage overhang, will be the better tow vehicle. This is why 5th wheels tow better, because they have zero percent overhang.

Interesting thread. I'm going to be moving up in the tow vehicles in a couple years. My short list w/o doing a WHOLE lot of research is the Tahoe or the Sequoia. I've never had much luck w/ Nissans. They are coming out w/ a new Tahoe this spring, not that you may care. I'm very interested to hear what folks have to say regarding your question !

I only plan to tow a 5k MAX weight camper the next time around.

I can only give you our account of a Sequoia. We have a 2002 Toyota Sequoia SR5 4 x 4 with over 100,000 miles on it. We have towed over 70,000 miles with our former large heavy pop up from coast to coast, north to south. We also used it to tow our boat. It has and still is an awesome vehicle for us. We have not had any issues with it. Have kept up on all maintenance and do inspections regularly. It is a very comfortable vehicle for travel and the storage space is amazing. On long trips we would remove the 3rd row seats because there were only 3 of us at the time and have a great amount of storage. We needed it with the PUP. For our year the towing capacity is 6750. Has worked well for us.

That comparison must be for the small V-8s in each model. I am fairly certain that the bigger 5.7 liter Sequoia engine will tow 10,000 pounds. What Nissans have you tried S1? Both of my Armadas have been beasts!! :-)

Just their cars. Late 90s and early 2000s Sentras and Altimas. Nothing but drama post 50k.

This past summer we upgraded to a Sequoia Limited from 4Runner to tow our x18d. I have no Armada history... just an Xterra 6 years ago which was fine and never a problem but was not used for towing. As for towing with the Sequoia, it has a powerful 5.7Lt engine which for our small hybrid (below 5000lbs) is more than enough. Inside space behind second seat is great for an over sized pet or all the last minute extra stuff we all need to pack. The on the rode comfort level for me and the family is also outstanding, with the DVD player keeping the 8 and 5 year old happy for miles and miles. We purchased used, low miles, one owner. 65 k is a LOT OF MONEY for new. My brother just purchased a Tahoe over a Sequoia because of the 12k price difference. Gas mileage is 10-12 towing. All in all, no regrets.

According to a leading consumer magazine the Armada has a very poor repair record, with the Toyota a much better record. Love my Tundra and have owned 7 Toyotas in my 70 years on this earth. My 06 Tundra went 86,000 miles before trade in and never had or needed a repair of any kind in 6 years. Even had original brake pads. 83 Cressida had over 250k miles when traded and 90 Corolla had
190k miles when number one son wrecked it.

We used to own a Sequoia and absolutely loved it, but never used it for any towing. When we bought our WhiteHawk 29SQB last year we ended up going to an Armada because it has a much higher towing capacity. The Sequoia only has a towing capacity of 7400 lbs, but the Armada has 8200 (2WD) or 9000 (4WD). Our Armada does a fine job pulling our camper but we still like the feel of the Sequoia more and wish it had a higher tow capacity.

I have an 07 Sequoia with the smaller 4.7L V8 and it pulls my hybrid no problem at all. Very smooth ride,3 rows of seats was a must for us. I bought it used, of course. These things are outrageous new.

Given a choice, and have towed with an SUV, I would never go back to towing with an SUV over a pick-up. However, those two vehicles are great choices.
