in PA you can renew registration online, no need to be in the state. TheY also did away with registration stickers as a cost savings measure. Now many jurisdictions use automatic cameras in their squad cars to monitor for violations. You only need proof of insurance to register, not proof of inspection.
Inspection, however does require a visit to a PA licensed inspection mechanic.

I used to get my trailer inspected at a local dealer that did a quick but useless job and charged me $35. Then I had a spring bracket rust through and break. It happened in a campground as I was leaving so no harm done. However, it would have been devastating if it had happened while on the road. From then on I had the inspection done at another dealer that did a through job for $50. It's worth the additional $15 knowing it was done right.
I do the registration through the mail so I never have to leave home. However, you can't get the inspection done without a valid registration.

In Texas it is the opposite. You can't renew the tag until it is inspected.

Here in the land of taxes, the enforcement of inspections is up to lleo. You used to have to put inspection sticker ID numbers on the back of the registration renewal certificate before you could get a new (then) plate sticker. Now the DMV doesn't care about inspection info. Just like they don't care if you have a birthday waiting your turn in line. (Mild sarcasm).

I hope I'm not making anyone upset over that remark.
