Travel with Refrig propane On/Off ???

Hi All, I just read an article that said it was not wise to travel with the refrigerator propane on as it could cause a fire and fire departments recommend that you don't travel with it on.

I have always traveled with mine on and I'll admit I've seen at lease one Class C on fire where the fire was in that area. Just wanted to know your thoughts on this matter? Yes or No ?

This subject has been beaten to death and the vast majority are "YES"

I personally did for 40+ years. TT's, FW's and MH's

I run with the propane on.

Moden rv propane systems, have free flow safety feature. If a line is ruptured it latches down, and stops the flow of gas.

Do fires happen yes. Are they caused by propane being used. Hard to say. I suspect more are caused by electrical issues than propane.

IMO, it is actually safer to keep the fridge on propane while driving (perhaps 12v would be safer if you have that option, but many rv fridges do not have that option).

The reason that I say it is safer is in regards to keeping your food at a safe <40 degrees temperature. Just one case of food poisoning, especially while RV'ing is all that it takes to learn a life long lesson about food safety and the importance of keeping your spoilable food cold, and especially while rv'ing. ~CA

Always ran ours on 12V with 12V/LP/120V fridges. Our newest campers fridge is 120V/LP only so run it on LP when on the road.

We are looking forward to our LP/120 refrigerator breaking down so we can get a straight 12 volt with a real compressor.

But until that happens, it's usually soft serve ice cream for us.

I removed all propane from my travel trailer, I do not trust it. All electric now. Never traveled with it On when I had it.

That is interesting. I wasn't aware that it was going away completely. I'll be interested to hear your report after you have some time with it.

to each his own Our home standby generator is propane fueled
Our prior home used propane for gas stove and water heater
Never had a problem. Now natural gas is not problem free but we cant have that; not available
the fridge runs on power from the TV while underway

Interesting. So, is the solar panel OEM, or did you add that? I can see the TV keeping the 12v going when driving, but parked or boondocking, you’d have to have the solar. Can’t wait to hear your update on how it works.

Did you order it or did the dealer tell you that? The spec calls for a 6 cu/ft gas elec with the 12v fridge as an option.

Only other thing could be that the gas/elec were in short supply.

Customer Value Package
Goodyear® tires (Made in USA), 6 gal. gas/electric DSI water heater, bathroom skylight, front diamond plate, pleated window shades, range hood, (4) stabilizer jacks, water heater bypass, Keyed Alike™ entry and baggage doors, spare tire with cover, 3-burner cooktop with oven, microwave, 6 cu. ft. gas/electric refrigerator, outside shower, power awning with LED lights and speakers, bedspread, JaySMART™ exterior lighting, large folding entry door handle, power tongue jack, black tank flush

I see your 1996 and raise to "since 1983"!

Yes, I am older than dirt but happy to wake up on the right side of it every day ...so far!

8 cu/ft fridge and solar are both options, so as I said they possibly couldn't get gas/elec and included 12 v with the solar. It only draws 8 amps so your panel should keep up.

MSRP sheet would give definitive answer, but adding both was only a $400 up-grade.
