Traveling with Kayaks
Does anyone know if there is a problem with crossing into other states with a couple of kayaks. We are from Caifornia and heard some states may not allow it?

I've never heard this. I don't see any problem transporting your kayaks if they are securely mounted. Peggy and I take ours out with us almost every trip..

Some states require lawnmowers to be inspected and boats before moving. I think they are looking for invasive species.

Rick what type of roof carrier do you have? I have a 2011 F150 supercab like yours and we carry our kayaks in the bed.would love to have that room back.

It is about invasive species. Maybe it is just CA. That has the restrictions? We have a F150 4x4, with 4 doors and 6' bed. I use a yakama rack system. One sits across the bed like a typical truck rack and the other attaches to the roof of the cab. My yaks are close to 16' long. One draw back is lifting them into place. They do site up high. I am fine but the wife struggles since she is only 5'2".

It is all about the invasive species, I have done it several times, they will stop you in an inspection station for any / all watercraft, boats are more the problem in inspection areas because of the water in the hull, and in the engine cooling system, jets are worse, this because the invasive species can harbor out of site.
Here is the key to hauling kayaks, 1st, make sure your kayak is clean and dry, inside and out, 2nd, stop at the inspection shack (usually within a mile or two of the state lines), pay the administration fee, (usually between $5-$15 bucks) and you get a sticker. 3rd, be upfront and honest when they ask when you were on the water last, and where you last used your kayaks.
If your kayak is clean and dry, it's easy to inspect and the invasive species are not likely to adhere to your kayak and you will have no problems.
Good luck

I can not speak for Rick but I transport my kayaks the same way. Yakima makes racks for specific truck models, I have a 2013 Silverado and use a Yakima rack specific to my truck to transport 2 kayaks on our trips. (if you have two people to secure them it is much easier otherwise you might get some new dents in the hood that cost about $200 to get pulled )

I have carried 2 kayaks on Yakima roof racks for many years. All over the Midwest, and Northeast and South with no problems.

So, only water can harbor "invasive species"? While I can understand a state being careful with not wanting any bugs/critters to enter their state from another, it seems silly that only a watercraft would require such an inspection. What do they do? Spray down the watercraft with a chemical if they suspect it is contaminated?
This reminds me of a past customs situation I had to go through. When I traveled back to the states from Germany several years ago, the customs agent asked me if I had been on any farmland during my travel abroad. I answered truthfully and said that I had done some hiking while in Germany. He then escorted me over to a carpeted mat, and had me shuffle my shoes across it, reminding me that it was "safe" to remove any possible contaminants.
As I walked away, I wondered how much I contaminated the sidewalks of Germany, my hotel, the various eaterys, airports and airplanes I walked through before my arrival to the states. And the shoes I was wearing that day were not even the ones I did the hiking in!
At least the tax money for that government job was going to good use.

they have an inspection station on hwy 20 going from Idaho into Montana to check for invasive species. also in Yellowstone they check for invasive species when you get a permit.

Thanks for the feed back. I go through the same type of inspections at a few of our lakes here. When we yaked at fallen leaf lake in Tahoe area they power washed them with hot water before we wete allowed to put in. But most of the time they just check to be sure they are bone dry. Thanks again everyone for the great feed back.

In NY they are getting strict on moving firewood. The current law is no more than 50 miles from origin and even then you are supposed to carry a form filled out with the info of where it came from and where its going and how much you have.

In MI you can't move firewood across a county line. They are trying to prevent the spread of the emerald ash borer.

Heres one of mine (D10 rec yak) on the Envoy and the other is a Ocean Kayak SOT Scrambler that we bring to the beach alot. I just installed a rack on my K5 to carry the yaks around on so no more carring them around sticking out the back window. I since got rid of the Malone carrier on the Envoy (wasnt too happy with the quality)

We are going to Rock Crusher Canyon RV Resort in Crystal River, Fl. The kayaks are both Ocean Kayak sit on tops. Wife's is a Venus 10', Mine is a Caper 11'. We have hauled them everywhere for 8 years.
We go to Crystal river every Feb/Mar to paddle with the Manatees and for the crystal clear spring fed rivers like the Homosassa, the Silver River and the Rainbow river. All within a 30 minute drive.

Can anyone tell me how sturdy the Thule roof rack system is? I have two 14' kayaks that I used to carry with a ladder rack in the bed of my old truck. When I bought my F150 crew cab, I purchased a hard cover for the bed and haven't been able to take them camping since. I'm considering buying the Thule racks like Snake has pictured above, but I'm concerned about stability. Would it hold them ok? And, would I have to tie down the front and back of the kayaks? I would hate to see rope flapping in front of me the entire time I'm driving!
