It never ends well. The brake settings should keep the TT behind you. If you feel unsure of this important part of safe towing then you should have everything checked out.

Could you go into a little more detail? Weather conditions, road conditions, traffic, etc? What brought you to the point of almost jackknifing?

I did that once. I tried to cut it too sharp backing up and ended up creasing my truck bumper slightly where it pushed against the propane tank. No TT damage, though.

I've done it once or twice. Luckily it was with a boat, and I was going slow, so it made "gentle" contact, didn't bend anything.

Well, that's good then, right? So long as you were able to get out of it without damaging anything, all is well! Nothing hurt but maybe the pride!

Go slow and pay attention, and you should be able to avoid it in the future. I usually will just give up and start over, or come at it from a different angle, or just give up on the spot completely, long before I get to a jackknife situation. But then my trailer is really friggin' long (for me), so I avoid tight spaces at all costs.

We often come close to jackknifing when backing up. Usually no damage, but one time the electric cord from the trailer to the tow vehicle got pinched by the frame and cut almost halfway through, which caused a short circuit that blew a fuse in the tow vehicle. Had to get a new electric cord and have the fuse replaced. No fun when we were getting ready to leave on a trip.

EXACT same thing happened to me, except mine got cut from being routed wrong, it got caught up somewhere in the hitch. Regardless, it's a real PITA to fix, and a real bummer when you're trying to get on the road for a fun vacation!

Never while going forwards. I did with my utility trailer a few years ago backing up out of a driveway in the middle of winter and the roads were icy. Not sure what happened, never have been able to figure it out. I think the truck slide on the ice one way and the trailer slide the other way. I had a nice U-shaped rig when I was done. It happened in a blink of an eye and over about a 2 foot distance. My speed was very slow. My the side of the truck bed had to be replaced.

If you ever feel that you're going to jackknife backing up, just pull forward to straighten out a bit and try again.

Never rush!

If you've jackknifed while going forwards then something has gone terribly wrong! [emoji1]

I guess up until this past year I had never done it and now I've done it twice. Once I was backing our stock trailer out of a driveway that had two curves in it. We had just dropped a goat off to be bred and was backing out of the breeders driveway without going off of the driveway and leaving ruts. Pushed the front of the trailer into the bumper of the truck. Saw it when I got home. Went inside the trailer and kicked it backed out. No other damage. Then the other one was this summer at the Ohio State Fair. We were dropping goats off and then I asked where the campground was so I could take the camper there. Everyone said - Go this way. So I went that way only to find out at the end of this road the gate was locked. With no one with me to help (they were at the goat barn) and a pretty busy place with everyone going every which way possible, backing wasn't feasible. So I decided to do a u-turn in a space maybe about 60 foot wide. It was tight. Ended up taking the right front tire of the truck up over a curb. Got it turned around, didn't hear or notice anything until I was unhooking at the campground. I put the bumper into the the WD bracket. Now I have a nice little circle on the left side of the bumper.
