Two TV's / Different Channels

Can't figure this one out for the life of me....

This past week were parked at a campground in Vermont and hooked up to cable. We have two TV's one in the main living area and another in the bedroom. The TV in the living area recieved 55 channels after performing a Scan. The TV in the bedroom only got 22.... This did not go over well with my bride, who was in the bedroom, as the 22 channels seemed to be limited to College Football and Informercials.

Any suggestions as to what the problem might have been?

The same thing happens to us - both are Furrions, but are not identical. You can even tell some very subtle differences in the way the menu works.

My only conclusion is that the bedroom TV (smaller) used a different chip for a tuner and isn't as sensitive.

The other possibility could be internal wiring. The way to rule that out would be to drag RG6 direct to the TV from the pedestal.

Interestingly enough - it also happens with OTA. The bedroom TV gets almost, but not quite, as many OTA channels as the bigger one.

The difference in the TV age and the way the cable company or CG send out their various channel signals. If I remember correctly quam 3 and quam 4 are the two variables and not all TV tuners will receive both.

Thanks!

Thanks for the replies! The TV's are definetly different sizes so different internal components makes sense. We are 3 years into this unit and only discovering the difference now... Tells you how little we watch TV while we travel

Can you temporarily swap out the TVs? That would tell you if it's the televisions or an issue with the internal wiring.

I have the same problem with our rig. I've always assumed different receiver sensitivities, different cable lengths (thus more line loss), and some differences in the splitter.

I would bet it’s the splitter in the camper... but it could be the tv tuners... swap the tv locations temporarily and see what happens.

I would also check the internal cabling or any splitters.

We had a similiar problem when scanning, our set would not pick up several channels that I knew were there in the past. I re-tightened the coax connections and re scanned and all was ok.

Maybe the splitter is the old analog type. It doesn’t have the bandwidth

Not this year, as this was the last trip for the season and the campground would be the only place for me to hook up cable. If at some point I decide I really want to test it, then Pconroy idea of running a cable straight from the post to the TV would be the easiest. But based on his post and Hoppers it sounds like this is a common issue in our years of Greyhawks across the model spectrum which would support the hardware hypothesis assuming they used the same TV's in all the units.

Ours too but the not camping season only lasts about one month.

Also, check for a 3-way cable splitter. Each split of a signal induces 3.5db of signal loss (IIRC - going from long memory). A 3-way is actually 2*2-way splitters in series internally. So one output will be 3.5db down, and the other two outputs are 7 db down. Always put the lower loss split to the most sensitive device - the loss is almost always stamped on the case. At home, my TV's get the 7db splits, and my internet modem gets the 3.5 for best transmission speeds. It may be possible to increase channels received on the 2nd TV by giving it the stronger signal.

There are two types of 3-way splitters. Balanced and unbalanced ... the balanced 3-way looses 5.5db per leg, the unbalanced looses 3.5db on two legs and 7db on the other leg.

Two TV's / Different Channels

Make sure all Tbs are scanning for cable channels , not antenna. Antenna will only find around 22. Also some tvs aren’t equipped with digital tuners which wouldn’t allow it to find digital TVs normally it will have a DTV emblem on them. Most flat screens do have digital tuners but some lower end ones that are 5+ years old don’t If the rv has been built in the last 10 years the splitter shouldn’t be and issue I actually work for a cable company and installed for 16 years and am now in the engineering side.

Splitters are not all the same and can have different frequency ranges. And when a splitter goes bad you can loose certain frequencies and loose blocks of channels. When one goes bad you won’t necessarily loose all channels. Not saying that the splitter is the issue but it’s possible.
