Understanding my Sanicon

I have a Sanicon Turbo 500 that came with my 30.5 MBOK, but I don’t understand it.

When I pull a grey valve, the water sometimes just starts flowing through the macerater hose without flipping the switch on. I just emptied an entire grey tank that way-- by gravity through the Sanicon hose. Sometimes, however, nothing comes out of the grey until I flip the switch.

I have it configured properly according to the instructions and by looking at it--the valve facing away from me is pulled out and the valve leading to the big gravity feed port is closed. I just assumed that nothing would come out until I flipped the switch, and I sure as heck hope the black doesn't flow until the switch is flipped, but I haven't experimented with that yet.

The Thetford manual and the Jayco manual both say that there might be a grey water bypass installed, which is unhelpful in both determining whether I do have it installed and in determining how it works if it is.

What's really baffling me is that the grey water flow is inconsistent-- sometimes I need to switch the pump on and sometimes I don't.

Thanks,

I was looking at those before I got a conventional macerator that I can use a garden hose with. The bypass tube is on the small side. Maybe its getting blocked by debris ?

Do have issues at different levels? Have you inspected the roof vent? I macerate at the house and my macerator will drain grey (after I'm done with the black) straight through it.

I have this setup on my White Hawk 24MBH. I really haven't noticed water flowing without the pump on, but I haven't really paid too much attention. I thought the bypass would just be the gravity feed discharge that you mentioned. I've dumped mine 5 or 6 times so far and haven't run into any issues.

After draining the grey tank pour a gallon of antifreeze ($2.00gal) down the sink.

I’m going to call Thetford and see what they say. I’ll report back if I figure it out.

On my unit there is no shutoff valve on the Sanicon outlet so anytime you dump tanks the waste water will gravity drain through the Sanicon discharge hose. I installed a shutoff valve at the hose connection to the Sanicon discharge for two reasons: first, to prevent water pooling in the Sanicon discharge hose when I'm using the 5 inch bypass slinky hose and, second, to isolate the inevitable leak in the Sanicon hose.

Be mindful that the Sanicon impeller can and likely will get clogged with lint/hair over time and you'll have to disassemble it to clear the clog. It's a good idea therefore to place lint/hair traps on your house drains.

I called Thetford. They told me that the grey water should flow freely without having to flip the switch on. I’m not sure why it hasn’t done this at times, maybe the grey water needs to rise to a threshold to start bypassing. They told me I should talk to Jayco to understand why it’s not consistent. I think I’ll just live with it. I’m sure there’s nothing wrong with it, just wish I understood it better.

Ok so here is what is more than likely happening. The sanicon is basically like a disposal. When it is clear, water can just flow through it. However when it is gummed up, it will be blocked and have to run to clear it. More than likely when you dump your blacks, small particles of TP or "other stuff" is left in the sanicon. Then when you dump your greys the next time, it is still clogged. To solve this, after you dump your blacks, run your black flush and then turn the sanicon on every now and then to clear it fully out.

Thank you. That seems very likely to be what’s happening and I will try that.
