Watch your height!

Saw this today in Northern Michigan. 10'6" was not enough for this MH. Appears they possibly ruined 2 ac units, and hopefully didn't cause major damage to the roof.
I'm at 12'6", I just hope I'm not daydreaming when I encounter low clearance!

Never good when you try to hold up a bridge with your MH or FW.

My unit is 37’ and the length is not something that ever worries me. It’s the height. One bridge near the house is 13’6”. I aim for the highest point. But, more often I bypass it because it makes me nervous.

I measured my trailer with properly inflated tires to find out that it sits exactly at 10'6"". I have that height information listed at the top of every trailer checklist I use to hopefully this keep in mind there are low clearance overpasses out there to avoid.

This is one of the things I'm concerned about when traveling in areas I'm not familiar with, especially when it comes to accidentally getting on a parkway. In ten years of traveling I've done it once and fortunately there was an exit before I got to any overpasses. I haven't found a GPS that recognizes and avoids parkways. One Garmin unit had the ability to eliminate sections of road but it would have been nice to have an intelligent unit where you could put in "avoid parkways" or eliminate roads by the assigned number or name.

I used mailbox numbers to stick “11-6” on the upper inside of the windshield on the driver’s side. Easy to remind myself of our Greyhawk’ height when I read a clearance sign.

On a piece of paper I just printed the true height that I measured myself rounded to the next inch and taped it to my inside windshield. I got this idea from another member of the forum.

... borrowing from the last 2 posts. Both excellent ideas, I'm going to copy one of them.
Bottom line: You'll have your height posted right in front of you when you need it most.

On the lighter side, you'll order the correct door height if you build an RV garage. (There's is a story on the internet by someone who didn't.)

I got into a scare situation like this probably 6 years ago. Went camping with some friends. They insisted we had to caravan. Our HTT was the biggest rig. They took a route I would never take with the HTT.

They turned onto a road, with a tunnel like train overpass. Sign pointing to the edge of the right lane said the height was something like 9'?". Middle of the tunnel 12'?". I know I was about 10'3" with the AC. I drove right down the middle of the tunnel. The road was wide enough I know I was going to be clear by at least a foot on the edges. I was glad there was no on coming traffic. I ditched them shortly after that.

If people want to caravan (I hate caravanning), and I am pulling the TT, I lead, or I ditch if their route does not match my preferred route.

Mine is 12'3". I have had some close calls but my Garman and other GPS apps I use all take clearance in the route choice.

It still make me squirm when I see one that is 12'6" which fortunately is not often. PS: You can't trust the numbers posted on overpasses.

I'm at 13' 7" so I check low clearances for any unknown highway we may have to use.

We're at 12' 3" and also use the Garmin and haven't had any issues. With that said, the Garmin tried to route us off the PA Turnpike eastbound due to what it claimed was low clearance in some of the tunnels in the western part of the state. Based on the number of 13'6" tractor trailers on the road I knew we were good to go...

Not sure why folks do not know the height of their rigs. I would think that would be the first thing to do when purchased. And I don't mean looking in your manual or taking the word of a dealer. I mean going up on a ladder and physically measure it with a ruler.

Exactly ^^!!
I had the suspension recall done on my trailer back in the spring and I did a re-stick measurement on mine and it grew 2" up to 13'-4".
Length with the bike rack is almost 49' and I dont really worry about that, it's the height that gets me. Campgrounds of all places you would think would keep their roads cleared of overhead tree limbs. Nope. I've purposely gone down camp roads the wrong way because of them. I'm not raking tree limbs and branches down the side or across the roof of a $100k trailer. Heck, I wouldn't do it with a $10k trailer.
Public roads aren't any better either.

A couple of time I've had to call the city a week before leaving to have trees cut so I can leave the house to go somewhere. Both times the limbs were cut by the next day.

Quite often I drive down the middle or in the oncoming lane to get around someone's 'beautiful trees' that hang over.

I'm not giving up an air conditioner either.

Rob, we live in Western PA. And over the past several years, the state removed the false ceilings in several of the tunnels. We go then them all the time with the MH. Nothing like taking the MH right down the parkway, thru the tunnels in the burg!! You don’t see many people doing that! Lol. But, the DH is a truck driver and is very comfortable with most roads! Lol. Now, me….. I would probably hit the pike to avoid it! Take care.

I never used to pay attention to bridge heights. I do now after getting a 2002 Jayco Greyhawk 18 months ago. Height - 10' 10". I post a printed label on the dash that says "11 FEET TALL"
