Water pump low/no pressure, gurgling

Just posting for others that may run into this issue.

Just finished up a week long trip on full hook-ups. On the way down I leave the water pump on so kids can use restroom while we make the hours long drive. I broke down camp, got ready to go, changed valves on the water lines to use the water pump and turned it on, but got almost no pressure/flow at any faucet. Just gurgling. At best it was similar to when a straw has a hole above the liquid and your trying to take a sip. You get some liquid, but its mostly air. I messed around with it for a bit, couldn't get it to work and waited till I got home.

At home:
I could fill the fresh tank from a hose. I could see the tank was 3/4th full from under the RV. I can see the feed line is from the bottom of the tank, so no chance of air getting in without some leak which was not present. I could country fill (5 gallon bucket with hose in it, sucked in by water pump). I took the faux wood off under the bed that was around the water pump. No water stains. Did not see any water except the sweat I'm dripping everywhere, as far as I can tell. So city fixture setting works, country fill works, but when set to 'normal' which is pull from fresh tank with pump, little to no water and/or gurgling. Air can't be coming from feed line as its on the bottom of the tank. I started wondering if the pump was going bad as we have run it under wrong valve settings or when fresh was dry a number of times. I was about to test pressure on the out side of the pump when I saw a little cylinder after the pump that feeds the RV with a drop of water on the side. On the top it says hand tighten only. Come to find out this is a screen, no idea why its on the 'out' of the pump rather than the 'in' but I tightened the plastic bowl and wah lah, everything back to normal. It appears this bowl was just lose enough to not leak (or just a drop) but enough to suck in air and prevent pressure. I can only guess vibration from the pump and driving got it loose. Something for everyone to check now and again, although mine is a pain as I had to remove faux panels to get to it.

Happy Camping!

My pictures are not good, but the screen is on the back side (out) of the pump and the plastic bowl is under the cylinder.

Posting in general forum as I'd guess most RVs have this filter.

BTW, this is the filter or one like it based on google searches and physical view of device:

That screen bowl should be on the inlet side. I clean mine annually. I'm always surprised how much crude it collects.

Mine was clean, even after 5 years. Almost redundant, but I suppose it depends on valve settings. Mine has one of those whole house filters. When I do city fixtures or tank fill it goes through the whole house filter. its only when the pump is in use that it uses this screen, which would be country fill or 'normal'. So it would be primary filter for country fill or secondary for pulling from fresh tank.

Either case it doesn't do much good, or as much as it should, on the output side. Now do I sweat it out, pull everything back out and move it.. ah it was clean, good for another 5 years
