I've been suffering from sarcoidosis for the last 14 years. In my case, it took specialists better than 8 months to figure out what the reason for coughing fits I had been suffering from. I was tired, I had no energy. And I was responsible for all TSA operations at a small regional airport, making it urgent to see what was wrong.
My doctor was wanted to send me to Mayo in Minnesota for roughly 2 weeks of tests. The pulmonologist a friend suggested ran the same tests in 1 day, verified sarc, and treated me with steroids. That was two years before I retired. Since then, we've moved cross-country for my wife's work several times, taken long trips, etc. Last few tests show remission, including my pulmonologist telling us he doesn't see any progression from tests and imaging done over the last 7 years.
Don't give up. Find a specialist who actually is familiar with available treatments. While apparently the damage cannot be undone, but it can be treated. Given a bit of time, hopefully he will have more energy. There is no reason not to make the trip if the other family members help. The trip itself will give your husband something to concentrate on rather than on sarc. No reason to give up everything.
