Weigh stations

Traveling down interstate 83 from Pennsylvania to Maryland, I saw a weigh station that said all vehicles over 5 tons must weigh. I remember reading a lot about RV's not being required to weigh in various forums, so I drove on by. No officers chased us down. Then, reading last night on other forums, it was said the sign says all vehicles over 5 tons must weigh. I am pulling my trailer with a SUV which in Pennsylvania is not classified a truck. Don't need a weight sticker.

Question 1 is, How many of you all over the USA have drove past an open weigh station and actually got pulled over for doing so?

Question 2, How many NEVER pulled into OPEN weigh stations and never got chased?

Question 3, How many got yelled at for tying up the scaled when they actually did pull across an OPEN weigh station?

This should be interesting.

Truck weigh stations are for commercial haulers. As a private hauler you are gumming up the works pulling in.

Keep on driving, it's your chance to get ahead of all the semi's till they pass you again!

My buddy pulled into one a few years back and they told him to move on!

I stopped at a agricultural inspection last year coming out of Florida just as a precaution because the signage was not clear. The inspector waved me on before I stopped.

Thank you for your email and for contacting the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA). Financed solely by toll revenue, the MDTA is an independent State agency that finances, owns, operates and maintains the State's eight toll facilities.
We appreciate your bringing this matter to our attention. All vehicles with a gross vehicle weight or gross vehicle weight rating of greater than 10,000 pounds must stop at open weigh stations. Only vehicles that are operating in commerce may be subject to a safety inspection.

Thank you again for your email, and please let us know if we may assist you further.

If the sign says "ALL VEHICLES OVER 5 TON", I go in. If it says "ALL COMMERCIAL VEHICLES OVER 5 TON", I drive by.

Its a technicality, you should stop if the signage states "All vehicles over xx tons" but as Norty says if you pull in they will simply wave you right through as they are looking for revenue from commercial vehicle enforcement.

You do not fall under the FMCSA standards unless you are operating in interstate commerce.

I have never stopped at any of them and have never had a problem.

Be eternally grateful and scared witless that the RV industry is so lightly regulated!

Police and other law enforcement agencies (tolls, registrations, inspections, etc.) generally ignore RV's, unless you are doing something incredibly stupid.

But that leaves us with our 'portable housing" built to standards set by the industry itself, the RVIA.

Double-edged swords are so wonderful, aren't they?

I hope you are not advocating more government regulation.

Up here in BC (Western Canada) the signs for the scales usually read " Commercial Vehicles/All Vehicles over xxxxkg gvw must report to scales" this goes by licensed gvw of the TV... NOT the coinbined weight of TV and TT. Sometimes it would be a good thing if they went with combined weight. (I wonder how many would be in trouble if they did bring everyone towing across the scales for wnforcemwnt)
Happy Camping

I'm a staunch Libertarian with Republican leanings. I will NEVER advocate MORE governmental interference in the lives of ordinary citizens or businesses.

However, without somebody looking over their shoulder, what's to keep the industry from falling deeper into cutting corners and building shoddy products?

Are the standards set by the RVIA adequate? Are they open for public (RV owner's) inspection? Who/what updates the standards? Who/what determines that a particular manufacturer is meeting those standards? What happens when those standards aren't met?

More government interference? NO! More RV owners taking an effective stand with more than just our money? Yes!

I agree.

The only way to make a change in quality is to refuse to buy shoddy products if they are overpriced.

I have traveled through, NY, NJ, PA, MD, VA, NC, TN, SC, GA and FL. I've never pulled in to a weigh station and I've never been stopped for not doing so.

Me either. I just get in the left lane and make way to let the truckers back in the entrance lane.

Here is where you and I part company.

I feel it is necessary to get the RVIA to be an advocate for the users of RV's not an "Old Boys' Club" for the manufacturers.

Kinda like the BBB, but with some teeth. Maybe a user-supported organization along the lines of the AAA?

Why produce a product that is known to be shoddy? Why is undercutting the next guy's price such a priority?

[We gotta take this to another thread.]
