Weighing in

So we are 10 days out from going full time and we realize we really need to get the fully loaded gross weight of the rig (esp since we agreed to keep Joan’s Kitchen Aide stand mixer - sheesh).

It occurred to us as we were driving the highway today - can’t we just pull in to the mandatory truck weigh station and get weighed? Or is all they do is tell you if you are legal yes/ no??

Does anyone know? We don’t mind going to the local CAT scales but there is a weigh station on the way to the next RV Park. Just wondering....

Those (mandatory truck weigh stations) are for commercial vehicles only. Although it may not be illegal to cross those scales, those officers would not be very happy to see you. At the very least you'd be unlikely to get the weights you need.

You can get the weights you need at some truck stops or at a grain elevator if they are not busy. They did mine for free!

Thank you oldmanAZ.

We kind of guessed something like that but were curious.

We’ll happily go to the CAT scales. They are very nice anyway.

Safe travels

As there are no Cat Scales near my neck of the woods I go by my local land fill. If I don't want a receipt they don't charge nothing. Weights are so very important!!

The weigh stations in GA on I-95 are all weigh-in-motion. Truckers don't stop their rigs to get weighed. They only stop if there is an issue. If you were to go there, you would just roll through and never know your weight anyway. The weight is displayed in the pilot house next to the lanes, not visible to anyone getting weighed.

Same on some roads in OK. Everytime I cross the detector it sets off a big red sign that says truck must exit to weigh station. The truck and FW only weigh 17,600 lbs as weighed by scales. I just keep driving.

You really want to get the weight of each axle... Most Landfill scales are "one single platform" and won't work for what you want to get. Cat Scales give you weight on each Axle for $11.00 and $3.00 for the second weigh at the same scale the same day.
