The best names, and the most meaningful ones, just happen without planning. Since nothing has popped up for us, our Jay Feather remains nameless.

The DW named the TV "BART" for "Big Ass Rugged Truck". She hasn't decided on one for the TT, but I'm sure she will. She also has a few names for me too. LOL!!

Anyone care to explain why the need to name "things" ? I can understand kids...pets...but inanimate objects ? Really ? I'm interesting in hearing the reasoning....

Anthropomorphism. Because it gives them an added bit of character. Adds a bit of sentiment to a vehicle. I think back to when I was a kid and our family had a pink Cadillac (no, Dad wasn't a pimp) which we named the Pink Panther.
My Camaro was Cam and probably one of my favorite cars which was very hard to get rid of.
Boats almost always have a name associated with them and are referred to as "she" (another example of anthropomorphism).
I even have friends in the service who name their firearms.
In the simplest of explanations, I would say, it gives them character.

I would say the "character" is all in the mind of the giver...a car is still metal, and rubber and oil and and... people, animals, they have character...inanimate objects don't change because we call them something different. I'm not saying it's wrong, to each his own, I'm only saying I "don't get it"... it's probably all me I'm sure..
I understand what it is, just don't understand the need to do it. As I said, I don't fall in love with "things", I only love "things" that can love me back...my Rv or car or even a boat, can't love me. I can like them, enjoy them, but never felt the need to give it a name.... i'm weird what can I say..

Not weird at all. It would be a boring world if we were all the same.

I generally don't name things either but who cares if some do. And I absolutely do love my things, usually more than any animals or people outside of my immediate family!

Daniel Boone called his rifle "Bess".
Nothing wrong with that.

If you call it "the trailer" you've given it a name. I enjoy clever or more interesting manners of speech. So I find it cool when people use innovations or unique names for things.
The views expressed may not be mine in five minutes.

Is that a name or just what it is commonly called? I just call the item what it is...a screwdriver, a trailer, a car, a truck, a key... it's fine if you want to call your key Billy...I just don't get it...that being said, I like typing on Betty and watching what I type on George..

We have an original name for our Starcraft. We call it "the camper". The Jayco we had before that also had a great name, "the camper".

By definition a name is "a word or set of words by which a person, animal, place, or thing is known, addressed, or referred to."
So if you wish to refer it the object by it's generic name it does make communication easier with other people who also have agreed that that should be the object's name.
We are all called by our generic names at times. Bill's father. OP. Then we are sometimes called by a more custom name like wags999, Bill, etc.
The study of naming things is actually interesting to nerds like me. We do it for a wide variety of reasons. Sometimes it helps to avoid confusion. I once played on a baseball team which had five of the fourteen players named Jim. We all received nicknames except for one player who got to keep the name Jim. Perhaps not so surprisingly he was the best player of the group. We sometimes use nicknames to soften the connotation of a word. We put a dog to sleep. Aunt Flo is visiting. We also use it, and I suspect in this case this is the best example, to show a greater connection to something. Sweetheart. Darling. Pup. Jaybird. Casa Mini.
Can you tell I have a M.A. in Literature and love studying word choices?

We just call it "the trailer" or "the truck". But what I called our old pop-up isn't fit for a family forum such as this.
