When people ask, "How long is your trailer?"

Do you tell them how many feet it is from tongue to bumper? Or How long the living compartment is? Or do you just use the numbers in the model that usually depict general length (19RD, 26BH, 28BHS, 32TSBH, etc.)?

When parks restrict length, which measurement are they referring to?

I use the manf. length.
If a park wants to know the total length from bumber to tip of tongue, then they can just go out there and measure it.

Interesting question for sure... I think that I have always used bumper to hitch just because when I make a campsite reservation they ask for the total length. Plus there really is that "guy thing" we have about how long it is... :-)

And I am 100% with Norty1... We only tell people that ours can sleep just us 4... We will gladly lend them our old tent we never use anymore...

Ball hitch to bumper is the true length of the unit and what is on the specs sheet. The manufacturer model numbers such as "28BHS" should not be considered when asked for unit length. The model numbers can be all over the place. For example, one year Jayco built the 28BHS and the G2 29BHS, but they were the exact same floorplan and exact same overall length of 30.5 feet. In most parks this is not an issue anyway, I`m sure if there was a 30 ft limit and my unit was 31 ft I could still fit........(and I would likely tell them it was only 30 ft long)

Found out something interesting while talking to one of the IDNR at Linclon State Park near Santa Claus, IN. Their system adds 6' to all lengths that are entered into their reservation system. ?? I could not get reservations do to the length of our unit, so while staying at Hoiday World we drove down just to scope out the park. All the sites were big enough, so that is why I ask the gal at check-in was going on and that was the info I got. She said use a length 6' shorter and from that point we had no more problems.

I'm willing to bet many other states or public reservation systems do the same thing.

......and for a fifth wheel? My info from Jayco says OVERALL length 42 feet 4 inches but also gives an EXTERIOR TRAVEL length of 40 feet 9 inches. I am assuming overall is front cap to rear bumper and exterior travel is king pin to rear bumper. I would measure but 2 feet of snow is in my way.......

And which measurement is the legal one for states and provinces with a 41 foot max legal limit?

wow, 6 ft is a lot to add on to many of the larger units!

Many online reservations sites show the max limit on individual sites. We keep notes on many CG's and mark sites that we know we can get in and when we make reservations, just enter the length needed to get the site reserved.
We have already scoped it out and if there is a problem, we accept our error.

I don't think CG's limit length for any reason than site length restrictions. We do know a few that only allow MH's. If they have a site age restriction we are a little apprehensive as to why.

I have the 28BHS which is half a foot over 30'. I would not want to be limited by that fact for certain sites with length restrictions so I would say it's 28 feet for that purpose, and 30 feet it I'm talking shop with the fellas.

I always give tongue to bumper to make sure the site that is assigned to me has plenty of room for my car/ SUV. For me it's best not to tell a "white lie" because if I'm saying 23 snd I'm really 27 then the spot could a little short when my SUV is added to that spot.

So far, when booking campsites, I've always gone with the overall length, tongue to bumper. In some provincial parks, have from time to time had difficulty getting in. Not because of the site itself, but because of trees along the road in front of the site. Pretty tight swinging the front of the truck.

(19RD, 26BH, 28BHS, 32TSBH, etc.)

Parks are using the total length I believe

It's not only the length of the site but the drive approaching it also. Tree's bushes etc may make backing or pulling in with a larger unit impossible. Working at campgrounds I have had that problem...guest will say they have a 22' unit, when in fact it's 25 or 26'. Can make a huge difference. I always go with the overall length of the unit, from tongue to bumper..

I know my trailer is only 29' and some change but I always say 32'. I've always said that to keep them from putting my in a site that might be too tight. Twice, at different campgrounds, I have had very tight spots and that's with me over estimating my trailer length.

My 30' overall length trailer is pulled by a 4WD Crew Cab LB with an 18" hitch shank. Unit Length ~51' ; maneuverability = 0

We wanted a trailer 30' or less because of length restrictions for some campgrounds. I'm concerned we may still have problems because of our TV. We'll find out this summer.

My 28BHBE is just over 33' by the book. I usually say "it's about 30 ft." I've only had one site where my overall length was a problem, and only one place we've been so far even asks how long the unit is. DW tells people it's 28', and I got tired of correcting her.

Before I go to a CG, I look at pictures of the layout on Google Satellite and Maps and street view if it's available. If I get to choose, I do so based based on that information and possibly a previous scouting trip. If I get to the CG, and I get around to my spot, I'll find out quickly if I can fit or not (I know my limitations and I'm perfectly willing to admit it if I think I can't put it in the spot safely); if I can't, I'll haul back up to the office and ask for a reassignment.

If I'm trying to make a reservation at a CG and I see a length limit of say 30', I will shop elsewhere. I like to think they have a valid reason for that restriction, and I'm not interested in running my trailer into stuff or paying to replace others' damaged property. Would I lie about length to get a reservation? Not likely.

Case in point, there's a fairly nice state park close to our house. We visited the park before we owned our TT just for a day trip. While we were there, I noted how small the spaces were and how tight the roads are for maneuvering. The park does not list a length restriction, but I know in my heart it would be a mistake to try to put my trailer in that park. So we just go there for day trips.
