When people ask, "How long is your trailer?"

Do you tell them how many feet it is from tongue to bumper? Or How long the living compartment is? Or do you just use the numbers in the model that usually depict general length (19RD, 26BH, 28BHS, 32TSBH, etc.)?

When parks restrict length, which measurement are they referring to?

I use the manf. length.
If a park wants to know the total length from bumber to tip of tongue, then they can just go out there and measure it.

Interesting question for sure... I think that I have always used bumper to hitch just because when I make a campsite reservation they ask for the total length. Plus there really is that "guy thing" we have about how long it is... :-)

And I am 100% with Norty1... We only tell people that ours can sleep just us 4... We will gladly lend them our old tent we never use anymore...

Ball hitch to bumper is the true length of the unit and what is on the specs sheet. The manufacturer model numbers such as "28BHS" should not be considered when asked for unit length. The model numbers can be all over the place. For example, one year Jayco built the 28BHS and the G2 29BHS, but they were the exact same floorplan and exact same overall length of 30.5 feet. In most parks this is not an issue anyway, I`m sure if there was a 30 ft limit and my unit was 31 ft I could still fit........(and I would likely tell them it was only 30 ft long)

Found out something interesting while talking to one of the IDNR at Linclon State Park near Santa Claus, IN. Their system adds 6' to all lengths that are entered into their reservation system. ?? I could not get reservations do to the length of our unit, so while staying at Hoiday World we drove down just to scope out the park. All the sites were big enough, so that is why I ask the gal at check-in was going on and that was the info I got. She said use a length 6' shorter and from that point we had no more problems.

I'm willing to bet many other states or public reservation systems do the same thing.

......and for a fifth wheel? My info from Jayco says OVERALL length 42 feet 4 inches but also gives an EXTERIOR TRAVEL length of 40 feet 9 inches. I am assuming overall is front cap to rear bumper and exterior travel is king pin to rear bumper. I would measure but 2 feet of snow is in my way.......

And which measurement is the legal one for states and provinces with a 41 foot max legal limit?

wow, 6 ft is a lot to add on to many of the larger units!

Many online reservations sites show the max limit on individual sites. We keep notes on many CG's and mark sites that we know we can get in and when we make reservations, just enter the length needed to get the site reserved.
We have already scoped it out and if there is a problem, we accept our error.

I don't think CG's limit length for any reason than site length restrictions. We do know a few that only allow MH's. If they have a site age restriction we are a little apprehensive as to why.
