When to replace Rainier Tires

I have about 4,000mi on the factory Rainier tires. Thus far I haven't had any problems but I know it is a roll of the dice. I plan on spending a lot of time in Eastern Oregon this year away from any roadside services. I find myself growing more and more concerned about these tires but I hate to spend money on something that isn't broken. I will be upgrading to 8ply tires when I do replace them. Looking for feedback/opinions, please.

NOW!!!

We had brand new trailer w 1500 miles. 3/5 tires had huge bubbles. Spare was completely split. 1 looked OK. IMO, replace them, NOW!

I have had the exact opposite experience but my trailer is a bit smaller/lighter than yours (see my signature). I currently have ~4000 on my tires and they look great, no obvious signs of distress anywhere on the tires. I check the air pressure religiously and try to keep my speed at 62 mph or less and so far so good.

No issues with Rainier either in the 14" size.

A thousand miles on ours, no problems. Tires still look new. I obsessively watch the pressure, and keep the speeds to less than 60 mph.

In 5 years from date of manufacture, but inspect them before every trip. If you see bubbles or tread separation replace immediately.

Good idea about getting heavier tires, that will hopefully reduce the chance of you having a failure.

We are getting rid of ours before we hit the road in the next month. 2k on them, look perfect but I don't need the worry. Maxxis 8008's soon. Next rotation after that will be new 110-lb rims and Sailun G rated.

Generally, it's not the mileage on a trailer tire that indicates replacement but rather age. If you cover the tires when not in service, they will usually last 5 years. I never go beyond that no matter how much tread. There is a date stamp on the side of every tire (it maybe on the inside or outside but it's there).

Check the DOT code birthdate on each tire. Generally if it is over 5 years old and a ST tire, you are on borrowed time.

It is a 4 digit code. first 2 are the week, last 2 are the year made.

They are only 12 months old. I am more concerned about the inconsistent reputation that Rainier tires have. At the same time my trailer is only 10 months old and I hate to spend $500 on something that may not fail anytime soon. It's really frustrating that there isn't an option for quality tires at the time of purchase.

I'm in the same boat; I've had my Whitehawk 27DSRL for 15 months (3,000 miles) and am seriously contemplating replacing the tires and maybe the wheels too and go with 15" wheels. My present tires look fine but I'm about to go on a 5000+ mile trip out west and would rather not spend time worrying about tires. My tires were built in February 2014.

6000 miles on our Rainiers and no problem. Intend on going 3700 more on them this summer.

1 year, 6000 miles, very even wear, no issues at all. Just swapped them out for Maxxis, but had no issues whatsoever with the Rainiers.

Just about 8,000 miles on my Rainiers, and other than two flat tires (not the tire's fault) I've had no issues at all. I always bring them up to the recommended pressure before we leave on a trip, visually inspect them, and keep an eye on them while traveling with my TST 507RV TPMS.

Happy travels!

You have to remember that many tire failures COULD BE due to incorrect loading, over or under pressure and generally not being cared for. That's not to say that there have been real issues, I'm just saying that you never really know all of the circumstances surrounding tire "mishaps". The attached article is good reading for the care of RV tires. One thing I found interesting is that for every 1# of under inflation you lose 20-30# of load capacity. That would mean that if 4 tires are underinflated by 5# each, the load capacity of the RV would be reduced by about 500#. That's a major deal. The other thought is that even though an RV may be within the weight limits, the load may be too heavy on one side which would cause an overload situation on those particular tires. Marathon tires are another brand that has had "bad press" over the years but I had two 5ers with them and never had any problems but I cared for them as though my vacation time depended on them. Good luck and be happy out there

I thought all the issues were with the Towmasters in the 16" size.
