Even with the low water level.

Last night at Sisters Creekside campground in Sisters, OR. It was a last minute change as our original stay at Trapper Creek campground by Odell Lake was canceled due to the Cedar Creek wildfire that has blown up in central OR. The rest of the week we are at Lassen RV Resort in McArthur, CA. Spent the day at Lava Beds National Monument - a lot of which is still closed after last years wildfires.

After work tomorrow, hook and book for Sleepy Hollow State Park just north of Lansing.
Never been there before, but it'll be another park checked off the list of state parks in Michigan.

Went camping by Johnsvilee, CA. I was happy not to have to deal with smoke from the wildfires this weekend.

Poverty Point is a very interesting place for sure. I grew up in the area and my Uncle farmed soybeans nearby just outside of Delhi.
What I find interesting is the story that many years ago (~3000), Native American Indians carried millions of baskets of earth and built these mounds over a long period of time for reasons that can only be speculated, commonly stated as burial mounds.
However, in the same region other mounds were found and material found within was carbon dated to be ~6000 years old (Watson Brake), which puts the timing around the same time as the Egyptian Pyramids (or even before) along with similar dating for pyramids and similar structures found in Mexico.
More recent research indicates that the mounds had to have been built in a period of months instead of years as the soils in the mounds never mixed (which would have occurred with rain and erosion), vs being built over years, (perhaps hundreds of years). If this is true, then it would have taken many thousands (some researchers say 9~10,000) of people to build these mounds in such a short time.
While not the mainstream narrative, there are those who believe that the American Indians simply discovered the mounds and they were not the builders however, they lived there for a long time and used the mounds for burials (similar to what some say about the Mexican and Egyptian pyramids and structures) and to build upon. Some believe that the underlying structures were built with sedimentary stones and that a long time ago there were walls, buildings, and pyramids that were later buried due to a cataclysmic flood that contained lots of mud and over time the sedimentary building blocks turned back to soil and to what we see today which appears to simply be mounds of dirt but were not originally mounds of dirt.
I have never visited the State Park there and was told by locals that the reservoir was completed around the year 2000. Some people believe that the reservoir flooded a lot of history... 2700 acres. On the other hand, perhaps the reservoir will actually protect what lies underneath to only be discovered a long time from now in the distant future. Enjoy ~CA

craigav, thanks so much for the insight. There are several historic sights that we will be visiting during our short stay here. The fishing in the reservoir is supposed to be awesome.
