After a career in firefighting, my wife and I aren't very accepting of smoke. We carry a propane campfire. Sitting around it everyone has a good seat. Turn off, go to bed.

I was at a campground here in Virginia one time up on SKYLINE DRIVE and this dude shows up a couple of camp spots down from me. He was pulling a utility trailer loaded down with camping stuff. After he unloaded his trailer items he had the whole bottom floor lined up with fire logs...

It wasn't five minutes later the Ranger came over and told the guy he would have to leave or burn all of the fire wood immediately. So the guy piled it all up and lit it off with the Ranger standing there...

After it all burned up and the Ranger had left several of us around the area that was watching took him some firewood to tide him over for the day/evening until he bought some local firewood... He had driven down from MD and was planning on a weeks stay as it turned out...

I bought my firewood from the local camp store on-site and I guess the sales slip does say firewood - never looked... Don't remember any special markings on the firewood.

No special markings Im aware of either here in Va., Roy. Also the state parks have the firewood bans but The private parks we use for the most part do not seem to have a policy on firewood.

In NY state parks, the regs say not to transport more than 50 miles. We camp all over the Adirondacks and Finger Lakes areas and just keep our wood in the truck. It is sourced from our own wood lot at our home. We only take out what we are burning and all the rest stays in the truck nice and dry. We even hauled wood on our trip to Delaware and nobody even asked about if/where we got it.

Side note: My dad, at age 67, has decided to get into the firewood business. He bought a wood processor, elevator and large dump trailer to do it. As a businessman, he said he must abide by the 50 mile rule and that is where the logs are sourced from. He must provide a statement of origin for the wood and he has to charge county sales tax at 4%. He is in St Lawrence county, NY He is 100 miles from me and could not sell me firewood.

It's a shame you can't simply enjoy camping without sitting around the ritualistic smoking fire. We've been to some places where the smoke was ridiculous and ruined the experience. But to each their own.

I understand the insect problem but unclear how effective the containment policies are.Logging trucks are hauling fresh cut timber up and down the same roads the campgrounds are on so......I dunno.. Also if you will not let me bring in firewood please provide an affordable alternative if practical.
And 99% of the time it's 6 little sticks of wet wood that will not burn no matter what you do. I watch all the campers around me having the same issues trying to burn wet wood.......such a scam.

TN state parks will not allow you to bring your own wood no matter how close you live to it, we are forced to buy it either from the CG or from a local vendor near the CG. It's pretty much a scam that I can't bring my own firewood from home to a state park 10 miles away but I can buy it from a local "approved vendor" 5 miles from the CG.....

I bring a bag of fatwood starter kindling and if I'm lucky I can sometimes get everything hot enough to start burning their overpriced, non-flammable "firewood".......

Every time we pull out of our driveway I have to shed a tear and wave bye to my all my good, seasoned firewood, even though I own a kiln and can run it through a proper bug-kill process just in case
