What about the built in tank cleaner, does that need anti-freeze?

Yes, they sell a hand pump to add antifreeze to the black tank flush

After a final weekend camping on Vets' day, came home to get anti-freeze in system before first good cold snap due the next night. In my haste, forget to bypass water heater. Realized before I was finished and flushed the entire system until all clear water came out. Started over, was done in 20 min.
Now, Question, when cleaning out camper for winter do you take EVERYTHING out? By this I mean beside the food, how about pots and pans, dishes and silverware and linen? Picked up dryer sheets today and plan on placing throughout the camper.
Have a bunch of strapping, was considering making a rib frame to put on roof and cover with tarp. This is to keep snow from building up as it will be outside. Should I bother? Previous owner stated he just shoveled off roof as necessary. If not, what do you use to cover the AC unit?
As for the stabilizers, I have mine down thinking this will relieve some to the pressure on the tires. Not a good idea? Was planning on greasing the threads so as not to rust.
Finally, my TT sits beside the house at the end of the driveway but on the grass. Should I extend my driveway to accommodate TT? If I leave on the grass, (at least for this winter) is there any precautions I should use? Any suggestions, ideas or criticisms welcomed.

(I voted)

I do my own winterizing. Might be overkill but I blew the lines out with air, making sure I got air through every spigot (hot and cold) plus the low point drain.

The I run antifreeze into the potable tank until I pumped pink through every spigot hot and cold.

Is this incorrect and/or too much?

With the temps we are seeing in the "What`s your weather like?" thread, I sure hope everyone in the cold areas got good and winterized this year! We have not seen temps like this in some time. Could also be some reports of vinyl floors splitting in the extreme cold spots, have heard about that before.

227 out of 257 voters do their own winterizing, Impressive! 13 of those other 30 never have to winterize, and one enjoys having frozen pipes!

So my question is how many use antifreeze as opposed to blowing out the lines? Seems to me it would be better if you could get rid of the water instead of using antifreeze. Opinions please.

I used to do both, blow out the lines then add the antifreeze, and after a while I just thought that was silly so now I just blow out the lines. I am always concerned with doing this so I may go overboard with my approach but I haven't had an issue with this method.

There is still a need for antifreeze though, have to get those sink traps filled with the stuff.

But will just blowing out the lines work on the water pump and accumulator tank (if you have one) or would water be trapped in there?

I don't have an accumulator, and I drain the water tank, run the pump until dry, then blow out the lines. BUT that IS one of my concerns, haven't had an issue yet.

I do my own winterizing and I blow out the lines first with compressed air and than run antifreeze through everything. I probably use too much, as I used 8 gallons to winterize our Pinnacle.

I used to have the dealer do it for piece of mind. Now I do it myself. Pretty hard to screw it up after doing it the first time.

The manual wasn't very helpful, so I took pictures of the valves and marked them up in a PDF that I can refer to anytime I winterize/dewinterize the camper. I have lots of notes on things that the manual doesn't cover.

I have done it since the first year and I could not believe it was so easy I thought I had done it wrong. But no. This is the coldest year we have had here in MN so I hope I did it correct. We will see.

Beware of my mistake. I bought a 2010 Jaco Eagle Super Lite last fall. I was not familiar with newer 5th Wheels. I had to winterize in a hurry. Grabbed the manual and went straight to the 'Winterizing the Plumbing System' in the owners manual. I actually used the air pressure method and followed with the RV antifreeze method. I followed the steps in the manual. No mention of draining the water heater. There was no drain valve on the tank. I assumed that somehow the tank drained itself in the process. You probably have guessed. Busted water tank. In January I took out the manual. Low and behold under 'Operating Instructions' there are also Draining and Winterization instructions. 'Water heater must be drained'. Too late for me. An expensive lesson.

I also use the air method after draining then use way too much Antifreeze. It's a couple more dollars for my peace of mind. Quite frankly I'm way more worried about rodents breaking in than anything else during the winter. I just watch the ads for deals on RV Antifreeze, then buy a couple cases. I'll have some left over in case we get a "re-freeze" in the spring after dewinterizing.
