Wiring battery monitor

I bought one of the cheap amazon battery monitors (two actually) and when I wired them up the positive wires burnt.

I hooked it up as per the instructions. The only thing I did different was hook up the positive wire to the same post as my converter wire instead of the battery. I figure it goes to the same place anyway right?

Does the monitor have to be wired to the positive lead on the battery?

Could I at least wire to my disconnect switch that’s on my positive side? This way I can shut the monitors off when at storage.

Something very wrong there....

I would check that you got the wire colours right... then I would put one of the monitors on a bench and use a meter to check for a short, or very low resistance, between the wires.
Then take a simple 9v battery and connect that.. does it work?
If not, try it the other way around....

Of course, the internal workings of the meter may be fried, in which case none of the above will tell you much... but worth a try.

What kind of wire did you all use? I used an old, really old telephone wire that had 8 colors in it.

Maybe it was my wire?

Also do you guys fuse it?
