Anybody towing heavy 5th wheel (14k+) with a 2022 2500 duramax?

Anybody towing heavy 5th wheel (14k+) with a 2022 2500 duramax?

I m about to purchase a 37mdqs and the coach weighs only 14,500 but my concern is the dry hitch weight which says 3290lbs.

Any feedback would be much appreciated !

3290 dry hitch weight on jayco spec sheet I believe is calculated as if the trailer is fully loaded at 16,900 which I will not be.
I will be empty and no water in tanks.

According to the formula sheets I’ve found on the web, they both show me with a shortage of 1037 lbs which is concerning.

I was hoping to find others towing a big north point or pinnacle with the same 2500 srw duramax.

Published weights will be substantially lower than actual weights from the factory. I'm not part of the weight police but there's no way I'm towing that 5th wheel with a 3/4 ton platform.

I have an F250 (10,000 GWVR) with and 9200# empty, 11,000# gross 5th wheel. There is no way I would try to pull a heavier trailer with this truck.

You are way into 3500 dually territory with that trailer.

Dry hitch weight is completely empty of everything, as it rolls out the factory door. You will be overloaded as soon as you hook up at the dealership. Everything you add to the trailer or truck is going to make this overload worse.

Welcome to the forum!

I agree I think you’ll find the actual pin weight will be considerably more than the listed pin weight. I would look at the rear axle weight rating on your truck more than the payload. Even then I think you would not only be over your rear axle weight rating but likely over your combined weight rating of the vehicle and truck together.

My RGAWR is 6600 lbs - I believe that is my rear axle rating
GCWR is 27,500.

My truck curb weight is 8236 plus the rv 14,500 is only 22,736.

Not sure if these figures are helpful.
I thought since my tires are E load rating 3800 lbs at 80 psi
I thought my only real concern would be the payload capacity
I guess I am not correct ?

Welcome to the Forum from the other side of the State!

I ran across this video yesterday, that will cover weights in depth. Grab a piece of paper with your numbers and enjoy. It should answer all your questions and concerns.

Gotcha your GCVWR is high for a 2500 that's impressive! I was thinking your GCVWR was 24k. By the time you add stuff to that camper I'd bet you'll be at 16k with a pin weight of over 4k. With the truck at about 8k I was thinking you would be over GCWR at 24k but if it's 27,500 you should be good there. You will likely be over on payload but that's something you will have to decide on how much over is ok. I still think you could also be over on your GRAWR but I'm not sure how to calculate that on your truck. I believe you have to figure in a percentage of the truck to that 6600 lb rating along with the camper pin weight. And of course these numbers don't include anything else you add to the truck like people, luggage, coolers, etc.

The big issue is IF you are ever in an accident (regardless of fault) a good lawyer and/or an insurance company may notice you're over payload and use that against you some way. I've never heard of anyone receiving any type of violation for being over payload in the US. I'm guessing it can happen though.

Given that many of these campers are reporting actual loaded pin weights of over 4k I probably would upgrade to a 1 ton or pass and go for a lighter 5th wheel.

Long story, but due to a breakdown and a shortage of available trucks, we ended up towing our 2021 Northpoint with Sierra 2500 for short time last summer. Same engine as the 3500 so no issues moving it and theoretically it was within all of the weight capabilities of the truck but it was not an enjoyable time at all. After an incident where a brief crosswind had me chasing the wiggle for a mile down the interstate, my wife and I agreed we had to find a dually. Took a huge hit trading in the 2500 but the towing experience is night and day and worth every penny. If you are talking about short trips to a local campground, yes it is possible but not fun. If you are talking about any kind of an extended trips, the Northpoints and Pinnacles are firmly in dually country.

I have a 2017 3500 Duramax 8' long bed with a #15,000 5th wheel camper. I wouldn't want to pull my camper with a 2500. My truck squats about 3-4" with the camper attached.

I towed the 37' Cyclone, 14K with a 2004 and 2014 Duramax 2500 short bed for 10 years. The truck will pull about anything and blow most Fords and Dodges off the road going uphill (that should start something) and never had a problem.

I am sure that there were times where I was over weight or at the upper end but most of my trips were in-state.

I am not sure what you are looking for but a 3500 would be better just for safety sake.

I pull a Pinnacle 36FBTS with a 2021 Ram 3500 SRW and long bed with no issues. Pulls and handles fine, and we get around 10.3-10.5mpg. Sometimes, like yesterday in heavy rains, 9.5

We talked on another forum about this and the more I read your posts about this I can’t help but think you should go a different direction with the trailer before you spend the $$ and find you don’t like how it tows. Or….

Second option, (flame suit on) bag it and see how it feels, but mentally prepare yourself for the idea of a different truck. You’ll know within 50 miles if you chose poorly.

That being said, after pulling the same trailer with a 2500 that had some suspension help and a 3500 SRW stock, I couldn’t feel much perceptible difference in the suspension. In GM world, currently the rear end is bigger, and you get a top overload on the 3500. The current year 2500 rear end is the same size as prior models 3500(-2019) which worked fine. All else is the same between these current year models. Maybe something about full torque in 1st gear on a 3500. Not certain on that. Even tires and wheels for the most part.

Now, if you traded for a dually, I’d imagine it would be a night and day difference. If you’ve got the means it could really be worth it. Based on my personal experience, trading a 2500-3500srw partly to appease the math is something I’m not totally sold on. Kind of a half step up and a boat load of money making the swap.

Thanks for your response Rodney ! Very helpful. I will be moving this one a short distance and it will sit on a seasonal site almost most if not all of the time I will own it.

which northpoint were you towing with the 2500 duramax and were you using bags or Tembrens to assist with level out ?
