Camping with a baby

We have a 1 year old and a 5 year old we are looking for a good way to put something in our popup for our 1 year old to sleep in without taking up much room. We will usually have both big beds full and looking for ideas on something small for the baby to sleep in. The pack and play we have is really too big it takes up the whole floor would like something we could put up on one of the counters that would be safe! Thanks

We had a small sleeping “crib” that was made to go between the parents on the bed. It was just big enough to give our daughter the room to be comfortable but kept her from rolling off the bed or one of us from rolling onto her. It was called co-sleeping crib or something like that. I’ll bet it would serve the same purpose and be small enough for a counter?

We used a bassinet, Don't recall for how long.

Another thought, you could build a crib rail like device. Kinda like an over-sized book stop for a book shelf. Size it for one of your "couch" cushions. Slip the support piece under the cushion and rail/wall, sticks up as high as you feel is needed needed. Probably could be made from some 1/2-3/4" PVC piping. The wall, could be from a scrap 1/4" luan, screwed/bolted through the piping. If the kid is placed at the end of the couch (use two of the PU walls for two sides), you could make one or two of them, to keep them in. One to keep them from rolling onto the floor, the other just keeps them from crawling forwards and out. Later when they get a little older you could use them as bed rails.

People on the site have posted a similar concept for their upper bunks in the bunk houses, as there is no side rails. I am sure you can find a few pictures.

edit; I did a quick search on the forum, and came up these;

We put the dinette table in the down postion and put a pack-n-play there. We put the cushions on end to one side, but dad to take it down every day.

I couldn't remember, but now that you mention it, that's exactly what we did.

Of course, it was a pain to put up and take down every day/night. Sometimes we just left it set up, and that's where he would nap. We would eat elsewhere in those cases (like outside).

I made a wall out of 2x2 and dowel rods that blocked off the side of the table/bed in our popup. It was about 12 inches tall and the length of the opening. Just kept them from rolling out. But if they woke up they could still crawl over and the drop was only a foot or so. I put a hinge in the middle and long L shaped corner brackets that went under the cushions to hold it in place. Worked for years and 3 kids.

We used this, and still do for the older kid on the top bunk. We have had this for many years.

We used a travel pack & play that worked well for us in our TT. It was a lot smaller than the regular pack & play.

I made a 3 sided crip with 2 runners attached to bottom that slid under mattress for Grandaughters 1st Child.

New camper

Thank you for all the replies! I think we have decided we need something bigger! Our baby is a light sleeper and having her in the small popup is almost impossible to keep her asleep! So we are going to try to sell ours. 2007 Jayco Baja 10y in very good condition! Let me know if anyone may be interested!

We’ve camped regularly with our 14 month-old for the last year. I recommend a SlumberPod.

pack & play

When we had a pop-up it had the table that you could totally remove so we'd take it outside and then put the travel pack & play on the floor between the dinette seats. Meant we had to eat outside but we were doing that anyway. Worked perfectly.

We did tent camping with a 9 month old until she was about 7. Then we went pop up. Tent camping with a 9 month old was memorable. Now that we are old and grey we have a 21 foot trailer I bought that one 4 years ago. Bunk model. Love it. Every one has their place.
