Gulp....here goes.

Hi all,
What a great site!

My wife and I just purchased our first RV, a used 2016 Melbourne 24k. 12,000 miles and 15.5 hours on the generator. We are from Chattanooga TN, we are 66 years old.

My wife has been a primitive camper her whole life....me, if it didn't have cable and room service....well that was camping for me.

So I guess we are meeting in the middle....sort of.

This Friday we are going to the KOA in Cleveland TN for our first trip. Watching YouTube and reading as much as we can to learn do and dont's.

We are looking forward to the adventure. Thankful I found this site.

Best to all,

David

Welcome, and it’s never too late to get started. Take it slow, make a checklist and follow it, best advice I can give. Happy Camping!

Welcome from Central Florida! Be sure to exercise your generator with that low of hours.

Thanks to all responders.
How do I “exercise” my generator?
Thank you.

Crank it and run it on a regular schedule with a load to keep it working dependably.

Get the model number, then download the owner's manual and give it a read.

You'll probably want to do a full maintenance work-over on it first thing. Change oil, air filter, spark plug, and other items listed in the manual.

To exercise, that will be outlined in the manual as well, but you need to run it an hour under load at least once per month. It also helps to keep either non-ethanol fuel and/or stabilizer in it when it's in storage. Some generators also have a provision to empty the carburetor before storage. Exercising it will help keep the carb from gumming up, and keep the windings in good shape so it'll be ready when you need it.

Oh, and BTW, welcome to the "club"!!

Congratulations from another 2016 24K owner.
I think the manual says to exercise the generator 2 hrs a month @ 1/2 load if yours is a diesel. I don't know about propane. 99% of the time mine runs is for exercise. The majority of exercise time is while I am driving with the rear AC or space heater running.

Congratulations and welcome aboard! I really like the concept of the rear bed slide out.

As for the generator, the hours on it is a bit light. I am assuming it is fueled by diesel, which I am not familiar with potential maintenance issues. Gasoline generators need to run at least 1 hour a month to keep from having carbonator issues. I strongly recommend running it at home for a couple hours, put it through its paces with varying electrical loads over that time frame. from idling under minimal load to full load. Such as having the AC unit on, heating some water in the microwave, etc. Just let it warm up for 5 minutes or so before putting a heavy load on it.

You'll love your Melbourne. We purchased our 2017 new in 2016. We've enjoyed traveling all across the country in it. We added all the bells and whistles and wouldn't trade it for anything. It drives beautifully (except in strong wind), has ample storage to take us out for two months at a time, and the mileage is great. We have 50,000+ miles on ours. Best purchase we ever made! Enjoy your travels.

Crank it up, allow to run 3-5 minutes, then set AIR (or space heater in winter) and run for 2hrs/ month

I jumped into RVing in 2007(40’ diesel pusher). Before I did, I read “The Complete RV Handbook” by Jayne Freeman. It’s on Amazon. I read it three times.... it alerted me to all the systems and well as numerous other things. I now downsized to 2017 Jayco Alante... much fun. Best of luck...just don’t get frustrated and get a good tool kit. Capon Jim
