Cool Hello Fellow Campers!

Just wanted to say hello. We are new to the Travel Trailer world having just purchased a Jayco Jay Flight Swift. I was happy to find such a helpful source of info here. I am sure we will have tons of questions that can be answered here and hopefully someday we can be the ones helping others with there questions. Our first question.... Our trailer comes with a power awning. What are the advantages and disadvantages? Do they roll up automatically if it is windy. If so, can you still hang lights from it. Do you need to/can you use awning tie downs? Thanks for any info.

Welcome to the forum. I do not have a power awning but here is a poll and discussion on awnings that may prove helpful:

Congratulations and welcome! I'm a newbie too so will have to leave the awning questions to the more experienced members

We have power awning and they come in and out very easily. Yes you can hang lights on them. We use those little black paper clamps. We were told by our dealer to never use the tie downs.

Welcome to the JOF and congrats on the new TT! I use tie downs on our awning but it is NOT a power awning. I can imagine it wouldn't be a good idea to tie down an automatic power awning. Others with much more knowledge than I will surely chime in and help you out.

Welcome and congrats on the trailer. You'll like the power awning - you can hang lights but if you have to pull the awning in quickly, the lights have to be removed. Really not unlike a manual awning but, if it's o-dark thirty and you aren't completely awake, pressing that button while inside your dry n toasty trailer might result in tomorrow nights campfire story.

Welcome kjc1963. We have a power awning on our 321 RLTS. It does not come in automatically when a wind comes up, but if it is not tied down it will move and not get ripped off the RV. It is also supposed to dump automatically if it accumulates water during a rainstorm. I've never had accumulated water so I don't know if it will or not. I do tie it down so that it does not flop in the wind. I never had a problem by doing this, but on the other hand, if they are predicting high winds or severe storms I will roll it in rather than taking a chance on having it damaged.

At the top of the page - click on "settings" then use the menu items on the left to update your signature and avatar. An avatar (that tiny picture next to your name) must be very small in size. If you cant re-size pictures, you can just add a picture in your signature profile.

Good luck

Power awnings are great.

They don't have a wind sensor and retract automatically, but it takes all of 30 seconds to retract so I just bring it in if we aren't around.

The autodump isn't any amazing technology. What happens is if water pools up the weight of the water will cause one of the rams to collapse a little and the water runs of in that direction compliments of gravity. The better option is to set the pitch of you awning so one side is bit lower and water will always run that way and you can make sure you aren't leaving gear under the potential stream.

To set the pitch...Once extended you will notice on the support arm on each side 5 holes with button in one of them. Simply hold that button and slid the pull/push the arm a bit and let the button stop in a different position. I think the recomendation is to make sure you never have one side set more than 2 positions different from the other. I leave mine 2 positions differnt all the time -- even when retracted.

Congrats on the new TT and welcome to the forum! Sorry I have the old fashioned manual awning, but I'm certain you'll gain the info you need here.
