Hello from IA - New to TTs

Morning all,
My family and I are new (have not purchased yet) to travel trailers. Currently, we own a 2016 Tundra 5.7 v8 Crewman. After digging into the numbers, I see the payload is 1240 (per the sticker). We were looking at the Jayco Jayflight 29BHDS. After looking at the 29BHDS numbers I'm concerned that I've aimed too high. Dry wt. 7250 and dry hitch of 695, I feel as though I'll quickly exceed GVWR (7200). I realize that WD hitches are available and preferred. However, as I'm new to this world, I have a very limited understanding. Bottom line, we'd prefer a bunkhouse (double bunks) trailer but want to remain in the realm of...safe.

Any information, help, or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Best,

Justin

Justin,

WELCOME TO JOF!!!

The members here are GREAT!!! There is a lot of GREAT information to be found here. I am sure that you will have information and pictures to share with us... so please do!!

I am not sure where you got your numbers for the TV, but if you look on the drivers side door jam you will have all the numbers for your specific truck. Take a look and post them so we can give you a good idea as to what your are capable of towing.

Hmmm, that payload seems a little low, most of the Tundra's I have looked at had a payload of 1500-1900 lbs. Did you get the payload off the door jam? Also, what engine do you have, you will need the big V8 to tow that trailer comfortably. When you are loaded for camping you will have a tongue weight of about 1000+ lbs, so you will be most likely be over weight. A weight distribution hitch is a good idea for most travel trailers over 20ft.

Hi Justin,
Does you Tundra have the factory tow package?
It looks like the Tundra tow capacity is around 10,000lbs and you'd be getting pretty close (if not over) fully loaded.

IMHU - the 29BHDS is a pretty big rig for being new to travel trailers.

I have a 2017 Tundra 5.7L V8 (max payload and max towing package) and 2017 24rbs TT. My trailer GVWR is 7500.
I wouldnt want anything heavier for sure and with only me, wife and dog our payload is comfortable. Your payload isuaually your limiting factor.
I think you have too much trailer for the 1/2 ton truck.
Personally, I like to stay within about 75% of my tow rating.
Here's is how I calculate my numbers.

Tow Rating 10500
Payload Capacity 2060

Hitch Wt 75
Driver DT (includes 150 lbs) 50
Passenger 150
Dog 50
Gear 200
Bed Cover 100
SUM PAYLOAD = 625

Max Tongue Wt. 1435(Capacity-Payload)

Gross Max Trailer Wt. 7500 (71% of 10,500)
Trailer Tongue Wt 12% 900 (63% 0f 1435)

Jayco 24RBS 7500 100%
Tongue wt Est. 12% 900 12%

Best regards,
Doug

Welcome to JOF! I look at the specs of that trailer and it look like that you would be pushing it, I would take another look at the payload.

Welcome (I am also in Iowa). I towed the 29BHDS with a F150 supercrew, it had a little over 1800lbs payload. I still ended up being over my rear axle maximum and long story short upgraded truck. At 1240 you will definitely be out of payload I think, I ultimately decided I wanted to not worry about it.

It is a big heavy trailer and you will know its behind you with a 1/2 ton was my experience, semis etc would push the back around. Stiffer tires and better suspension did help.

Have you looked at the 27BHS at all?
