Talking Hello From New Jayco Owner pulling with Honda Ridgeline

Hello from Mineral Point, PA. We purchased our 2011 JayFlight and just started going places. I pull it with a 2007 Honda Ridgeline. I try to watch the loading and keeping things balanced front to back helps a lot. I also work ham radio and GMRS while camping under call signs K3WS and WQIV262.

I welcome comments and suggestions from other owners pulling with smaller trucks. I do hope to buy a larger truck for longer trips some day.

You can e-mail me direct

Welcome to the Jayco Owners Forum Tom Brew! We have several other Ham Operator's who frequent this site. I see from your profile you have a 2011 Jay Flight 26BH(?). That tt's dry weight is 4585# (with gvwr at 7500#) and your Ridgeline tows at 5000# max. My guess is by the time you add the propane/dishes/food/pans/people in the truck/etc you will have exceeded the tv's max . Any chance you will be buying a new tv soon? Congrats on the new tt

Hi Tom,
Glad to hear from a Honda Ridgeline owner, I have a 2010 Ridge but don't use it to tow my TT. I just purchased a 2010 Jayco G2 31BHDS that will be put on a permanent site in Central PA in March. The Ridge should service you well as long as you keep within the weight requirements. Don't expect much more than 8 to 10 MPG when towing.

Welcome to the forum

Hi Tom and welcome to the forum. Glad to hear from another Ridgeline owner although I do believe you will be looking for another TV in the near future. I tow a much smaller Jay Feather Sport that comes in under 4000# loaded (the rated GVWR is more, but I weighed it at a CAT scale on the way to Disneyworld to get the actual weights). I towed it over 5200 miles last summer and had no problems but I personally wouldn't want to go much heavier than I am. We had to make a panic stop in SC and all went well with my Prodigy brake controller, but it was scary nonetheless.

Here's a link to a post with some photos of my setup,...
http://www.jaycoowners.com/showthread.php?t=920

My Ridgeline is a 2009 and my understanding is that the gear ratios were changed that year. I average 12 MPG towing and get 22+ MPG when I'm not towing. I do try to keep the speed under 65 when towing and that helps with the gas mileage. There's a lot of information on towing with a Ridgeline over at the Ridgeline Owners Club forums. If you have any specific questions for me just send me a PM and I will get back to you.

As with any vehicle you find that wind drag nearly doubles (if not more) just going from 55 MPH to 65 MPH.

With smaller vehicles I'm not exactly versed in them but there is only some much weight those small vehicle can stop (even with good trailer brakes). So be wise and consider all you weights and the capability of the vehicle...

Thanks for asking and it is a 26BH and the family and heavier loads travel in our 2nd ridgeline. We bought 1 ridgeline in late 2006 (an 06) and mine mine a 2007 when the 07's came out. I do watch the loading of the TT and keep my TV as empty as possible. I do hope to buy an new larger TV soon as we are going to Orlando FL in March 2011. Just not sure what I really need in a TV for my 2011 26BH. Suggestions are welcome.

To all the HAMS keep an eye on http://www.wanrepeater.net as we also plan to add HF to the network as well as an RV'er node for campers everwhere to link into as I plan to host a mobile AllStar node and a mobile GMRS repeater sometime this summer giving any camp site that I am in a very nice Ham Radio access and Park Wide GMRS coverage. 73's to all HAM's reading this..... We made it from Mineral Point PA to Melbourne FL 26BH and 07 Ridgeline

UPDATE. :hihi:After making a few trips to Mill Run PA and Hagerstown MD we decided to give the 2007 Honda Ridgeline a real run for the money. On March 18, 2011 we loaded up and headed off for our yearly one week Florida trip. We did well going over the hills leaving PA and on the advice of a friend took route 22, 99, 76, 70, 81 to 64 to 95 to avoid DC traffic (1152 miles). It was a lot more miles and not as flat on 81 as reported by my friend so we simply took 95, 495, 270, 70, 76, 99, 22, on the way back (964 miles).

On the way down we ran 9.2 mpg and on the way back we ran 6.93 mpg. In each direction we stopped at South Of the Boarder cam ground for the night. (24.95 for the night 30amp full hook up and gated security) I made the stops to rest the horse and driver as I drove the whole trip.

Our 2011 Jayco 26BH held My Wife, Son 11, Daughter 10, Cat 7 months, Yorkie 1+ year quite well. We loaded anything heavy behind the wheels to reduce weight on the truck and ran empty tanks. I have no idea what my actual weight is / was but I ran between 60 and 65 on the way down and only had problems with sway when larger trucks or a bus would pass.

On the way back I ran between 55 and 60 as we had some weather, rain, wind, and light snow to deal with. I have posted a few pictures in my album and will be posting more with a full write up. I will say that I feel very lucky that we made the trip with no problems other than the cost of gas. oh yeah my truck now has just over 111,116. miles on it. I had the oil changed, brakes, trans, steering checked, tires rotated/balanced before the trip. On a side note my truck runs about 1900 rpm to go 65 mph no load on flat road and with the Jayco behind me runs 2500-2800 rpm on semi flat roads to give me 60-65 mpg. I did all I could to keep rpm 3500 or less on hills and never went under 40mph on any of the hills. I was very happy the Honda could "pull" off this trip.

We ran with almost nothing other than family and the dog in the truck with trunk empty and a 5 gallon can of gas and 2 bikes in the bed of the truck. Gas can was not needed but I felt much better having it.

Yes - I will be looking for a new pulling truck this year but I am very happy with how the Honda handeled the trip and pulling our trailer.

For the ham radio readers I ran K3WS RV Wireless Mobile AllStar NODE 27660 as seen on http://www.wanrepeater.net with great success. I even provided the lower end of the RV park with wireless internet service in the process.

I hope you enjoy my report.

I'm betting the consensus by most members here would be to spring for a 3/4 ton if you can. You will have all the truck you need if/when you upgrade your tt. If your budget only allows for a 1/2 ton, that should work fine too, but make sure you go with the 1/2 ton that allows for the highest tow rating vs the best gas mileage.

Thanks for the update Tom, and I'm impressed that your Ridgeline did so well and with 111K + miles on it, ... Wow! Gives me hope that mine will last me a few more years.

Sounds like it was a good trip. Keep us posted on your future travels.
