Hi From Ohio
I'll be picking up our new trailer (Eagle HT 324BHTS) on Saturday from the dealer. Super excited, I haven't had a camper in about 4 years now. Have reservations to take it out the following weekend at state campground near by.
We'll be taking it down to West Virginia in October to go white water rafting on the Gauley River, I'm a little worried about that trip as there is a section where we go up a hill/mountain, very curvy as it should be, with drop offs off the side of the road. Little nuts without a 38ft trailer behind me.
GVWR on the trailer is just under 11,000, I can tow just under 13,000 with my truck. This will be the first time towing anything with this vehicle so I have little reference. Anything I should keep in mind on a big hill like that? I don't intend on having the tanks full, full hook up site down there and I doubt we'll be any where near the 11k mark.

Congrats on the purchase. That's a very nice, comfortable trailer. You'll love it.
Be cautious of the payload capacity of the truck and your hitch weight. The 13k towing capacity is misleading. You need to know how much carrying (payload) capacity your truck has, and this number is going to be found on the yellow sticker usually inside the driver's door.
Use that payload capacity, less the hitch weight, to determine how over/under loaded the truck will be. Factor in people and any gear in the truck too.
That's a lot of trailer for a 1/2 ton - regardless of Jayco calling it a HT (half-ton towable) model. Your tongue weight unloaded should be a tad lower than mine but its still considerable. Be careful.

We"ll be staying at Rifrafters Campground in Fayetteville. This will be our third time on the Gaulley, first time at the campground though.

Great info. Tongue weight is 930 lbs, truck payload is 1565 lbs. Will need to carefully monitor the weight of the rest of the payload. I had the same issue with my 2010 F150 and Tracer.

Welcome from Indiana. I used to tow a 35' TT with an 1999 Excursion. We lived in East Tennessee for several years and crossed the Appalachian Mountains many times. I always wanted a little heat in my trailer brakes before starting on the downside of the mountain. So, I would give the brake controller in the TV a couple of short taps at the top just to get a little heat in the brakes. Depending on the grade, I would drop into 3rd gear. I was taught to tap the brakes before a curve if needed and not in the curve. If you feel a trailer sway, tap the brake controller in TV and NOT the TV brake. I also try to alternate braking between TV and trailer if possible. I made the mistake once on some switchbacks in North Carolina and the price was new brakes and rotors on all 4 wheels of the TV.
Be careful and enjoy your Jayco! I'm sure you got this!
