Congratulations on the purchase. I trust the inspection and negotiations went well. Enjoy the experience, camp in it at home, or very close, the first time just to get the "feel" for how it is. After the first night in it, you will probably find things you want to change, then it's really game on! Lol.

Your next task...weigh your rig, figure out what your tongue weight is (wheelbase looks like it's going to be high) then figure out how much margin you have for cargo. Congratulations! Oh, you probably need a WD hitch.

Welcome from another no. Californian. Just my 2 cents, I would put it in the shop. It will be out of the weather. You are wanting to do some up grades and modification, I myself would want to be inside ( out of our hot sun and rain ) you will be able to set up a work area next to the trailer, you can slid your tools under the trailer instead of having to put them away for the day, and I'm just guessing that if your father-iaw has a large shop he is pretty handy with tools and a extra hand can be real help. Besides the Sanoma and Mendocino county's have some of the best camping areas in all of California! Have a great time with your new adventure, your kid's will get some great memories.
