Smile Jayco 175RD and other lite TT

Howdy folks. Picking it up next week. Tow car is a 2017 Toyota Highlander. What should I know? Was it a good match? Highlander had CVT Transmission with coolers, putting on aftermarket hitch. Do I need airbags? Could use some encouragement lolololol....

Howdy to you and welcome to the forum.

Really can't help with your tow vehicle questions. What does your Toyota owner's manual say about hitches and trailer towing?

Hoping you got the six
with the tow capacity of 5000 lbs.
Max tongue weight 500 lbs
Payload circa 1400 lbs

Depends first on your payload in the tow vehicle.

I towed a 2009 Jayco 1206 tent trailer with my 2012 Highlander V6. The trailer was 2800lbs unloaded, 3300lbs loaded I believe (This was prior to my knowledge of this forum, so no CAT scale weights, just the numbers from the sticker).

I expect that I was probably overweight judging by my weight for my current trailer.

We were 4 (2 adults, 2 kids aged 7 and 9) when we went on a ~1800km trip from Ottawa to Thunder Bay.

On flat ground, it towed well (but it was a tent trailer, so much lower profile and less wind resistance). I had a WDH with sway bar (which you'll need to get, as over 2000lbs needed one with my 2012 Highlander). Never had a problem with sway.

Biggest issue I had was towing power up hills. I'd try and take a bit of a run to the bottom of the hill and bleed speed off as I went up. Sometimes I would be ~110kph at the bottom and top out at 60. I probably could have gone faster, but didn't want to push it. I definitely would not want to pull 5000lbs up a hill though.

The trailer/Highlander combo did feel heavy and squatted (I didn't do airbags or anything), but I felt comfortable and would do it again (but might look into airbags/timbrens with a heavier trailer). I wouldn't pull it over the rockies or anything, but for usual flat-ish towing with the occasional hills, it was great.

I really do miss my Highlander (now I have a Tundra to pull our x213). It was a great SUV.

Happy Camping!

Thank you. We bought the car prior to thinking about a TT. With 10K miles only we could not trade-in (upside down w $) so we are stuck with the Highlander. We love it but.... 2017 has a bigger motor and a new 8 speed CVT trans with coolers for towing. We decided to go for it... living in the Sierras will prove whether or not it was a SANE lolol decision. This is our 2nd Highlander, the 1st was a 2002.
We will know this Wednesday I hope, first tow from sea level to 3200 feet. Yikes.
I'll post the results here.... very exciting.....!

Hello!!! We got the V6 with the 2017 bigger...New and Improved...lololol engine and CVT trans. 2900lb with 700lbs cargo (guessing w water, gas, batteries). is all I want to pull. I'm trying to get my 1977 Ford 250 running and titled but that's another day... we're getting older and waiting for another day just doesnt make sense. We're going TT camping!

Our truck is rated to tow 5000 lbs.
Payload 1546 lbs.

We have no issues trailering the 195 which is a little bigger than your tt but the same total weight loaded.

So far its been over various Rockies four times.. And to 9000 feet. No issues.
We're in Maine so we have four crossings of the high wind Great Plains too.

WDH for you remains to be seen.. We are fine without one..

Seems like a nice group of people already. Look forward to posting and reading these posts. Wondering if there is a YouTube sharing spot. Vlogs and videos helped me pick the 175RD, and after looking at 3 or 4 competitors JAYCO won. Those videos helped shorten the shopping quest and WOW, it showed so many places to camp... excited to explore. I started a thread about YouTube, hope that's ok?

That's encourging!!!!!!!!! We live in the Sierras... We'll either be a good test or a disaster but either way Toyota will have a real-time review of their 5000 lb tow claim.
Thank you for that post. Reassuring, very!

Its usually the truck payload capacity that goes first..
15 percent of 3500 is about 525 lbs tongue weight.. That counts. Leaves you some 975 lbs to load in the truck
Fuel counts.. 200 lbs for fuel
? for you
? for stuff in the vehicle.

The tow capacity is almost a meaningless number.

Do check that you can brake on a panic stop safely.. And you don't feel like you are floating ( indicating insufficient weight on the front axle of your Highlander).. If so get a WDH,
