Just bought an '06 1206 PUP as our first RV

Howdy all,

We just picked up a 2006 Jayco 1206 camping trailer and are really looking forward to putting it to some use starting later this spring. Since I started looking at small travel trailers, hybrids and PUPs I've had a preference for Jayco's products. The right opportunity came up last week so we drove 100 miles to check one out and decided to buy it.

The trailer has only been used a handful of times and the interior appears as new as an '06 could look apart from a few years of dust from sitting in their driveway most of the time. The downside seems to be that no maintenance has been done so the surge brakes (I was expecting electric brakes)and they look like the might be in bad shape. I opened the reservoir and it was a rusty mess. I'm hoping that flushing the reservoir and then purging the lines will get it back in to working condition. I'm pretty mechanically inclined but will have to get smart on these rigs in short order before we go camping. This and a new battery and possibly new tires might be all I need to get rolling.

I'm looking forward to learning from other Jayco owners and hopefully be able to contribute to the forum in time myself.

-David

If it's a rusty mess inside the reservoir you may have more on your hands then just a flush. The rust in the fluid may indicate that you will need new brake lines, maybe more. If it ends up requiring a complete brake system rebuild I would consider switching over to electric brakes.

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone!

Off hand, cablerum (and anyone else for that matter) what would you estimate it running to switch over to electric brakes? Got a setup you'd recommend? I'm completely new to this but from what I know this moment your basic WDH will not work with surge brakes on top of the fact that you have no control over the brakes from the TV. I'm a fan of WDHs especially since the toungue weight can get pretty high on the 1206 if you load up the storage compartment in the front especially if I decide to lug along my Honda EU2000i and other goodies.

Thanks again for the welcome and for any experiences/advice you guys can offer!

David,

Welcome to the Jayco forums!

Here is a little information on your 2006 Jay Series PUP for reference in case it didn't come with the PUP:

Weights:
Unloaded vehicle weight........ 2,400 (lbs., before options)
Approx. dry hitch weight.......... 305 (lbs.)
Gross vehicle weight rating.... 3,450 (lbs.)
Cargo carrying capacity........ 1,050 (lbs.)

Measurements:
Travel length........... 18' - 8"
Campsite length....... 22' -10"
Approx. travel height....... 56"

Tank Capacities:
Fresh water capacity (includes water heater).... 23 (gals.)

Recommended loaded tongue weight should be 10% to 15% of the loaded PUP weight.

Bob

The payload was one of the features that tipped me towards this PUP vice the hybrid.

I towed it dry 100 miles bringing it home at 55 MPH with one moderate ~6% grade and managed 18.2 MPG via calibrated ScangaugeII. I made about 22 MPG on the way down. If I can make 15 MPG or so loaded up I'll be very happy.
