New campers from SC

Hey All,

Shrpshtr here. The DW and I bought a 28BHBE for our 1st travel trailer about 3 weeks ago. We've already spent 4 nights in it but haven't really camped yet. The 1st trip was to the beach for a softball tourney. We parked it at my buddy's place (E/W hookups only) to "test" it out. The 2nd trip was to Ocean Lakes for Halloween weekend and we had a blast. The only bad thing about that was we weren't setup near our friends so we basically just slept/showered in the camper that weekend. I really can't wait until our 1st real camping trip.

Right now we're just trying to get things setup. So far, we love it.

Congratulations and welcome to the forum.

Yes, you've really camped. Since it's your first TT, it's best to start close to home to get the feel of the unit, setting it up, and repacking it for the trip home. Getting comfortable with everything will make later trips much more enjoyable.

Welcome to JOF from another SC camper. Enjoy the rig!

The good thing about where you live is you can camp almost all year long.

I am already enjoying the benefit of the knowledge & experience found here.

Here's the story...

On my trip to Ocean Lakes, I raised the electric tongue jack to take pressure off the WDH and blew the fuse. Well, I searched the panel & breakers to diagnose. (Out came the volt meter, etc., etc.) I finally found the 30amp fuse at the base of the A-frame and front of the trailer. Thinking I was prepared, I quickly replaced the fuse and proceeded to lower the jack and it blew again. I'm nothing if not persistent, so I replaced the fuse a 2nd time only to have the same result. At this point I'm certain I have a bad jack or switch. A quick call to Camping World (1.6 miles from OL) quickly educated me how much I was going to dis-like the warranty process through Camping World and Jayco. In short, the guy says $85 to come diagnose the problem. It would then be 2-3 weeks minimum to get the warranty claim approved and the repair done if I left my TT there. OR...I could take it back the 150 miles to the CW I bought it from and they can diagnose it there, then the 2-3 days to get replacement approved, and then 2-3 weeks turnaround time if I left it. He did say I could bring it back to them (another 50 miles one way) to get the work done if I didn't want to leave it. Needless to say, I wasn't thrilled at either option. So, I manually cranked the jack and proceeded to try and enjoy my weekend.

Upon my return home, I pride myself on being handy and mechanical so I decided to do some research to determine if this was a project I could handle on my own. After .000003874 seconds on Google, this site had several mentions of a sticker that should alert you NOT to raise or lower the jack too far or the result would, in fact, be a blown fuse. Imagine my surprise. I went out and checked and sure enough, red sticker right there near the bottom with said statement. So, with the jack now situated in the proper range using the hand crank, I replaced the fuse again and sure enough, it works like a champ.

Of course, in explaining the situation, I am not sure why "Sean" at CW didn't point this out as an option to check at least but that's a different story.

So, I tip my hat to you all for saving me $85, 2-3 weeks time and at least 1 trip over 100 miles to find out something so simple was the issue.
