New Jayco owner.
Hey folks. Just bought our first Jayco. A 1998 Jayco Eagle Lite 211 5th wheel. Had camped with Motorhome last few years but miss not being free to drive off and explore new areas. Now, Jayco advertises this model as towable by minivans and SUV's. Its 4100lbs dry. We drive a 2003 Ford Rqnger Edge. Its very hard to find correct specs on this model, but it is rated 9500 gvwr. You guys know a lot more than us WO your input would be great. A new truck is no issue, but love my Ranger.

9500 GVWR RV is already more than a handful for a 1/2 ton, a 2/4 to suites better.
Look at your door sticker or go online what the Ranger edge can pull. Seems to me your out of luck with that combination.

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your first Jayco.
If you check the PAYLOAD of your Ranger (BTW, we had one years ago and loved ours) against 25% of a 5th wheel GVWR, you'll find the Ranger can't handle it regardless of what the marketing folks say.

There are three terms to become familiar with. They are payload, gross vehicle weight rating or GVWR and towing capacity.
Payload is what the vehicle is capable of having added to it such as passengers, luggage, accessories, motor and trans fluids, etc. but excluding a trailer. The tongue weight of a fifth wheel would be considered part of the total payload on a vehicle. Essentially, the payload is everything that is added to a vehicle beyond what is on the vehicle already as it rolls off the dealer's lot. You will generally find this number to be the lowest of the three terms that I mentioned.
The second term is the gross vehicle weight rating or GVWR. In short, this is the weight of the vehicle from the factory plus payload mentioned above. Another way to look at is is the maximum allowed weight of the vehicle after packing it with people and stuff.
The third term is the towing weight or towing capacity. This is not to be confused with the weight the tongue of a trailer puts on a vehicle (tongue weight). Tongue weight would be part of the payload. The towing weight or towing capacity is what the vehicle manufacturer says their vehicle is capable of pulling. If your vehicle is rated to pull 6,000 pounds then weigh your trailer after its packed with your personal effects, kayaks, dishes, etc. (But don't go over its own GVWR) and keep it under 6,000 pounds.
It's all about the numbers and what they mean. I hope this helps and perhaps those more skilled in this arena (engineers in this area) will find a plainer English to spell it out.

Congratulations on your new Jayco and welcome to the forum. Does your name Wingman409 have something to do with the military?
