New member, still shopping

Greetings all,

New member here, living in Charles Town, WV. My wife and I have been on again, off again talking about getting a TT as a way to get out of the house and do some vacationing. Our thought is to start with short weekend stays relatively close by and gradually spread out over the next few seasons to the beach and locations further away. Also, our thought is to start relatively simple and small, then upgrade if/when we decide we really like the RV Way.

We have an 8 year old boy, and sometime between now and Monday, an infant boy. Obviously, I won't be running out and buying anything for a few weeks, at least.

A few weeks ago, we looked at a new, 2010 26BH at Triangle RV World. Their advertised marked down price was just a bit south of $14K, but after adding back on the WD hitch, Tax, prep, and other 'bits' was back to above $19K. I wasn't too sure of this and my skeev-o-meter was beginning to peg out and so we left. But then again, I don't have enough experience in RVs to know if this was a good deal and the add on's were to be expected.

We really liked the layout and size of the 26BH, and think that would be a good first TT. Small enough to be manageable by a rookie, but roomy enough to be comfortable and useful. I think we'll look for other dealers in the area that carry Jayco products and see how I feel about them and the deals they offer.

All of our recent talk and looking began with an acquaintance offering to sell his 2005 165 for "nothing more than taking over payments" as he's a bit over his head financially at the moment. Turns out he still owes $9K on it and it wasn't in the best shape, having sit unused and basically unmaintained since the week after he bought it in late 2004... so we politely passed. Would have loved to help him out, but it was just too compact, I believe, for our needs. But we did come to the realization that my 2001 regular cab F150 (with the 4.6L V8 and 3.55 diff) was inadequate for anything substantial and we'd need two vehicles to carry everyone. So last week I bought a new SuperCrew F150 with the 5.4L and the regular (not max) tow package, which is good for 9,600# of towing. To keep a safety margin and to keep from working it too hard, I'll limit myself to a 7,500 pound TT (Gross weight, not dry).

Anyway, sorry I rambled in my first post.

Bruce

I think you're going about things the right way - and congratulations on the new baby boy! I can remember having my kids out camping from as young as 3 months old! For us, when we stay at home over the weekends there's always something that needs to be done, some chore here and there and you tend to forget to spend quality time together. When we're out camping we're almost 'forced' to spend that time together! It's a great way to keep the 'fun' in the family! I can't give you much advice regarding the price of a TT - our $ may be near par, but costs are still quite different up here! Enjoy your search for a trailer - good luck!

You might want to consider buying a used trailer that has an extended warranty that is transferrable to a new owner. It would limit your initial investment and confirm whether trailer camping is your cup of tea. If there is a city near you that has a craigslist identity you might try that. Or autotrader.com has a search feature that lets you define search parameters and specify how far from your zip code you want to search/drive. Just a thought.

Hiya and welcome to Jayco Owners Forum! When we first looked for prices on the final two on our wish list... Jayco as we now know was on that list... we started with Ebay which helped us find some low prices... we dealt with local dealers based on that price and found the lowest. Anyhow, not sure how this can help you negotiate but here is an url for your desired tt... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/10-Ja...ZRVsQ5fCampers Whatever you wind up doing, let us know. Keep in touch once you buy the Jayco... we are a family here
