Smile New RV'ers

Good morning! First snow arriving today in MN.

My name is Bob and my best wife ever Sandi have been retired for about 5 years. We have decided to start a new adventure (part time) with an RV. We have never done this before so it is all new to us.

Due to events, we did not get our truck and RV until mid October. We will not get to use it until after Christmas when we will head South for warmer climates for a while. In meantime it is winterized and waiting to travel.

We are both quite hesitant about this not knowing for sure what all we need to do and expect. I have been and will continue to study these forums and try to find out what I need to know to help us through our trip.

Thanks in advance for your help and patience.

Bob

Happy for you with the new adventures! Lots of information on this forum.
Down load the owners manual and brochure from the Jayco website and start reading. Your unit will come with literature and manuals for the accessories, read them to get familiar with those accessories in case of problems.

Dry camping in the driveway is a good start to knowing your RV. I remember when we picked up our first RV. Learned tons camping in the driveway.

Bob & Sandi, welcome to the Jayco Owners Forum. What model of RV did you purchase? Whatever it is, there are many on this site who have experience with that model and can help you. Happy Camping

Welcome to JOF and congrats on the new memory maker. Weather isn’t very nice now and won’t be for a few days but there will be nice days ahead to practice on the driveway. We’re a couple hours east of you and will be headed toward Texas for our first snowbird escape after Christmas

Minneapolis, Minnesota? Isn't that the place that gets all the snow?

We got our 26BH at the end of May so we could have some time doing some small trips around Michigan. We got back into trailering after a 15 year hiatus, and we wanted to regain our skills and to sort out any issues our 2017 trailer might have.

Some of the sorting out was just modifications to make life easier. Some of the sorting out was to replace substandard equipment with something better (converter/charger and ceiling lights). And some was to fix issues with the plumbing (leak near toilet, and hole in the freshwater intake tube that leads to the water pump....had a hole in it and would not prime fully). Oh, and there were holes in some of the roof sealant, so we replaced all the roof sealant with Eternabond tape. Tightened all our lug nuts to between 90 and 120 foot pounds (some were loose). Replaced gray water tank extension that fell off after the first weekend trip. And more.

Everything's pretty much sorted out now. And, we've fine-tuned our checklists for packing, and for breaking camp and departing.

In two days, I'll be taking our trailer from our home in Michigan and towing it to a storage facility just a little north of Birmingham, Alabama. Wife retires at the end of December, so we'll drive our tow vehicle to Alabama, hook up, and prowl around the south (no snow!). Drop it off when we're done, and go back north with just the four wheel drive tow vehicle.

If we didn't take the trailer south and store it there, it's very easy for me to imagine weather and roads in Michigan that are NOT towing friendly. Towing on snowy roads or ice is not my idea of a good time. Won't you have a similar situation in Minnesota at that time of year?

I would also be concerned about taking off on a multi-state trip in an untested trailer.

My concerns are:
- new to trailering (towing, backing, and all that goes with it)
- Minnesota winter driving
- untested trailer
- Your first trip could be a frustrating one

It's definitely not something I would do. Won't go so far as to tell you what you should do, other than assess your skills and ambitions.

For every cautious approach like mine, I'm sure there are those who will say shove off and go for it. Hey, they could be right.

Just my two cents.

Concening For Sure

I don't have an exact schedule after Christmas. Will hope for a open in good weather at some point. Your right, I'm going with an untested trailer and praying all will be good.

Welcome and congratulations on the upcoming adventure.

So much good info on this forum, and really helpful members.

Two main peices of advice
1) take a few short trips around where you live and know the roads with your rig before you leave on your first trip. Learn how it corners and how it feels at higher speeds. If it doesn't feel right, it's always nice to have a few days or weeks to work on adjustments and not to have to mess around in a fast food restaurant parking lot (which is what I often end up doing).

2) especially until you get use to the driving, take it slow. Don't be worried about holding people up, they'll get where they are going.

I see you are bringing your best wife Sandi. What's your other wife's name?

Enjoy it out there.
